ROMANTIC WARRIORS II - About Rock in Opposition

United in their opposition to the music industry, a collective of five progressive rock bands (Henry Cow/England, Sammla Mammas Mana/Sweden, Stormy Six/Italy, Univers Zero/Belgium, Etron Fou Leloublan/France) started the "Rock In Opposition" movement (RIO) in 1978 by kicking off a festival at the New London Theatre. The movement had a short term life but spearheaded the creation of it's own sub-genre in progressive rock often referred to as "RIO music", but perhaps more appropriately labeled "avant-progressive". Despite its short life-span the movement has been influencing musicians worldwide for the past 35 years. This film chronicles the history of RIO and the music and musicians the movement has inspired. Included are dozens of snippets of live concert recordings and interviews with the musicians involved, often unknowingly, in the "RIO scene". The film is also a travelogue that follows the development of the genre from it's inception in Belgium and England, through Europe and the United States, and culminates in a visit to Carmaux, in Southern France, where the RIO Festival has been held since 2007.

While producing the documentary "Romantic Warriors II - About RIO", filming live concerts and collecting interviews in the RIO and Avant Progressive scene, the Zeitgeist Media team acquired a wealth of extremely valuable footage that far exceeded what we could fit inside the film. So, we decided to release a companion DVD with special features that includes 60 minutes of live concert footage of eight RIO/Avant Progressive bands that are featured in the film, and 40 minutes of unseen interviews with members of the original RIO bands as well as contemporary musicians currently shaping the sounds of modern avant-progressive music.
