Topic: Best Prog/Proto Prog album 1967 -1969 Posted: May 20 2004 at 12:07 |
1967 - 1969, The dawn of Progressive Rock, please vote for the 5 top albums in your opinion.
I know the list is far from perfect, but I tried to include some of the most representative albums of the era despite rhe band, due to the limitations of the poll format. That's why I left albums like From Genesis to the Revelation which I don't consider prog' and included Roling Stones "Their Satanic Majesties Request" and Tommy by The Who which I believe are at least proto prog'.
I know everybody will have a favorite not included (which you can mention in a post) but I'm sure will be easy to find at least 5 favorites from the ones included.
Each week I'll make a new one for each year starting with 1970 if there is interest.
Again please vote for 5 albums and only once for each one.

No surprise that King Crimson is running away with it.

I suspected it, mathematics don't lie, but I asked just one vote for each album, it's obvious ITCOTCK was going to win, so there was no need for double voting, but....What's the problem, use your 5 votes as you want, but try to vote at least for 4 different albums.

I think of the albums here, Abbey Road is the best one. The
inclusion of Crimson isn't fair to the others, because it's the first
full-blown progressive album.
It's interesting how important the influence of the Beatles
was and is on the original proggers. Crimson was heavily
influenced; "Happy Family" on Lizard was a surreal parable
about the Beatles, and Belew continues to be very Lennon
influenced in his songs...their cover of "Free as a Bird" was a
testimony to this. And Peter Gabriel shows a lot of Lennonisms,
even on his latest album "Up"...it's like they established a point
of reference that remains central to progressive music's notions
of songwriting.
I personally find that Inna-Gada-Da-Vida was just very long
and repetitive, with one of the first very long (albeit boring)
drum solos. But a full-sided cut doth not a progressive album
make...

I think to lump all three of these years together does not bring about in a useful result.
Because 1967 was very different than 1969 (and 1968), I think each of these years should be polled separately, because several substantial stages of prog rock growth occurred between Sgt. Pepper's and ITCOTCK.
Then you could see how the psychedelic/proto-prog evolved into full on prog, which is I think is what's important to know.
