Topic: Best Greg Lake Solo guitar-piece Posted: May 19 2004 at 07:18 |
Everyone familiar with ELP, knows that every ELP album (with the exceptance of Tarkus) from the classic era, has the "inevitable" Greg Lake acoustic guitar piece.
But which is considered the "best" among the users on this forum?
My choice is The Sage. One could argue that it's a bit out of place on Pictures... But anyway it's in my opinion "the best" of the aforementioned.

'C'est la vie'! Thats a wonderful little tune! 'From the beginning' would be second place

Interesting that the 2 best known ELP acoustic tracks "lucky man" & "still....you turn me on" are yet to garner any votes (early days, yet, I suppose)

From the Beginning. Not complex, but a great vibe.

C'est la Vie has that lyrical self pity that Lake is known for.

"The sage" gets my vote. The studio version tacked onto "In the hot seat" sounds great too.
I know "Lucky man" is very much a Lake track, but for me it's most memorable part of it is Emerson's moog solo at the end.

From The Beginning is a gem. It's a bit of a 'chill out' number on the album following the fury of of Enigma Pt2 but still stands as one of Lake's best efforts.
Luck Man is also decent.A sort of Homage to Bob Dillon but with a rampant Emerson moog solo thrown in![](smileys/smiley36.gif)
The Sage.Lake's voice is amazing on this.Certainly a strong contender.
C'est La Vie is nice but IMO there is a better song on Works- 'Closer To Believing' which in my mind would be a stronger contender although I still rate From The Beginning higher.
I'm not at all surpised that Still You Turn Me On has not got any votes.Lovely melody and singing but extremely dodgy lyrics
OTHERS LAKE SOLO EFFORTS IN ELP WORTH MENTIONING OUTSIDE THE POLL:
Watching Over You.Ok it's from the 'dreaded' Works Vol II but this is an nice song the Greg wrote about his newly born daughter at the time.
The Only Way.Quite a controversial peice at the time.Lake puts forward his humanist views and disdain for organised religion very succinctly.Doesn't fit the criteria for acoustic guitar though in this thread but I wanted to mention it anyway!
Footprints In The Snow. From Black Moon. It's a better song than Affairs Of The Heart and tends to be overlooked unfairly.

I would say still you turn me on if it wasn't for those god awful 70s guitar breaks, so I'd probably plump for from the beginning.

You know what song I really like on Works? Hallowed be thy name.

"From the Beginning", though I also like "Still You Turn Me On" - the live version rather than the studio.
