The rationale for liking them is they have brilliant keyboard work and fantastic vocals, but the basis for them capturing your imagination had never been fully developed.

Well, they have Tarkus, which can capture your imagination well enough, and they have the story(s) from Karn Evil 9... I think it's not the same story throughout, is it? But then again, at least what I can hear at the end of the third part might catch the imagination of sci fy fans.

For me they're amazing, the first four albums are masterpieces and they're as good as Yes or Genesis for me.

ELP were never a consistent band so none of their albums has an even flow to them although Trilogy was probably the closest . I think Camel are the most consistent band . Who do I like more? ELP of course. Who is likely to get a mark deducted for a 'dodgy track'? ELP of course.

But that's what you do if you have the skills and background, just like a cook or carpenter who only succeeds by demonstrating how good he/she really is.   Even more so for musicians.   That's why it's called show business.

I've also seen a lot of people on RateYourMusic insist those Italian prog rock groups Greg Lake signed to Manticore Records (PFM and Banco) actually improved on ELP's style. I guess a lot of the divided reactions ELP cause have to do with non-UK audiences' threshold for goofy British humour?

I do like British humour and don't find ELP that funny. It's ok, kind of in the middle, not as outrageous as Sparks nor as witty as Tull.

ELP strived to be highbrow - from recording techniques to pretention lyrics, they begged to be seen as classicists bringing their pomp to the haggard masses.  They'd run around stage changing instruments; Emerson would take 20 minute Bach-soaked solos; they'd release LPs with liner notes full of w**kery.....there's no wonder they have such a reputation.

I, for one, have whittled my ELP collection down to just the first album, Trilogy and a "hits" package I burned from my favorite pieces from other albums.....you see, you can't even call an ELP track a "song", it's a "piece".

I prefer Emerson with the Nice, Lake with the Crims and Palmer with Atomic Rooster.

I like to feel the suspense when you're certain you know I am there.....

they get some hate but they get some love as well. So, NO, they are not the most disliked.

I like their early stuff but they started going downhill starting with Works 1, all their albums from this point are uneven and difficult to listen (at least I find it difficult), some great songs but a lot of filler.

When they do classical pieces, they are stunning. Pictures At An Exhibition is my favorite album by them. When it's original pieces, I can't help but feel they really are lacking compositionally. Karn Evil 9 comes close though. I can't get enough of "Come inside the shows about to start. Guaranteed... TO BLOW YOUR HEAD APART!"

First album was cool. Next 2 albums have some cool songs but tarkus title track has some boring parts
All I like is prog related bands beginning late 60's/early 70's. Their music from 1968 - 83 has the composition and sound which will never be beaten. Perfect blend of jazz, classical, folk and rock.

Dream theater's fan base are an army or raging fanboys who think that they can do no wrong, and make up for any hate they get

im sorry you have such a one sided opinion

I'd say PA is way more kinder to James LaBrie compared to who made this spoof and it has 2505 likes!!? ShockedShocked
I can't believe people actually think or thought this was real LOL
I must add tho' that I do like DT a lot, even if the singer at times (while knowing it's coming...) makes me cringe when he sings out of tune Big smile
