Some of my favorite classic prog bands are Yes, King Crimson and Gentle
Giant. I enjoy Pink Floyd occasionally as well. However, compared to
the ten or so prog metal bands I frequently listen to, I feel like I
need soem more older prog bands to listen to. Sure, Yes and King
Crimson's discography could keep going for a lifetime, but what other
some other good bands? ELP did nothing for me, Genesis did little. I'd
be willing to give Genesis another chance, of course, since all prog
takes a bit to sink in, but I want a little more obscure stuff. No
Zeuhl or anything too weird please (says the man who enjoys On The
Sunday of Life). I just want good prog, no matter the genre. In
particular I do want to get into some good Neo prog, but Marillion
still does nothing for me.
Oh, I like Anglagard and Spock's Beard too. |

Good neo prog for someone who likes prog metal? You should try Arena. Also Enchant and Tiles could be for you... And of course IQ. Did you like Red era King Crimson? You can try Anekdoten (three mp3s on the Archives). Have you tried Van der Graaf Generator? You are asking for some obscure stuff...

VdGG has yet to really hit me as something amazing, altough I like them
the same way I like Genesis. It's basically small hit or huge miss most
of the time as of now. Who knows, maybe they'll grow on me.
I in fact LOVE Red era Krimson, Red being one of my favorite albums of all time. I'll check out Anekdoten now, as well as those other bands. I've heard some Focus before, but I wasn't really paying attention, so I'll listen again. |

Good Neo Prog would be Arena or IQ. Contagion(Arena) is pretty heavy and very melodic...easy to get into as well as IQ's Dark Matter. Also try these modern american acts on for size: Discipline or Salem Hill. Discipline will be a little hard to get into, but if you like extreme dark prog, there are few who rival them. Their singer is amazing. Get Unfolded like Staircase. Salem Hill is the more accessible choce. Get "Be". Good concept album and they combine alternative and prog much better than The Mars Volta does. Keep trying with Genesis and VdGG...when it does finally hit you...you'll be absolutely blown away. |

Something softer would be Pendragon, like them a lot "Window Of Life" for starters |

If you like Crimson try - Van der Graaf Generator (a more classic KC
like sound) or Anekdoten (Red era KC). Or hunt down the McDonald &
Giles record. Its like KC of the time, but a bit less ominous and
jazzier. I really dig it. And the groovy threads they are sportin' on
the cover...priceless.
If you like Anglagard try SFF (Schicke Fuhrs & Frohling) like a spacier Anglagard with Floyd tendencies. Like Gentle Giant? Try Echolyn. Newer band (relatively speaking), but incorporate a lot of GG's sound into their own, and yet keep it very original. If you havent heard Chris Squire's Fish Out Of Water yet, do so. I also like a lot of Riverside's stuff. Find it to be a bit more energetic and fresh than most other neo-prog type stuff. Just a few... Edited by Nipsey88 |

What about some fusion prog like Frank Zappa or Colosseum?Or you can try Jethro Tull, their great for sure.Caravan also are excellent and if you like Gentle giant ,i think you will love Echolyn too.But i must say that Magma from the Zeulh genre you don;t like are very good.Espesially their first album,Kobaia. So i gave you fusion, folk, canterbury, symphonic and a bit of zeulh? You choose!

I agree. ENCHANT's "Juggling 9 or Dropping 10" or "Blink of an Eye" are great CDs. For TILES, I like "Fencing the Clear" and "Presents of Mind". None of these CDs are debut CDs or their latest. Also, John Mitchell (Guitar & vocals from Arena, right?) has a new project.... KINO. It's no Transatlantic, but it's sort of a classy, non-obnoxious prog CD.
