Hey,

Just a quick introduction to myself and a topic for new people to post their tastes on.

Personally my favourite proggers are Yes (pretty run of the mill, i know)

Hot on their heels are Genesis and ELP who i also love.

Another of my great passions is Pink Floyd who although not classed as prog by some, are one of the most creative and amazing bands of all time. Bit of an anorak when it comes to the floyd and own every album.

I also, off the prog topic, love the beatles (there's no reason not to) and again own every album.

I don't think there's a form of music i don't like and have a fairly big funk and soul collection too.

My favourite instrumentalists (prog and other)

Guitar

Eric Clapton, Steve Howe, Dave Gilmour, George Harrison, Paul Simon, Jeff Beck, (Brian May!)and obviously Hendrix (although not no.1) etc.

Keyboards

Keith Emerson, Ray Manzanek (the Doors... seriously!), Rick Wright, Rick Wakeman, Billy Preston,  etc.

Percussion: Bill Bruford (technically excellent) Keith Moon, John Bonham, Ginger Baker, etc.

Vocalists: Jon Anderson, Paul Mccartney, Chris Cornell, Robert Plant, Jeff Buckley, David Bowie etc.

Ideally, you could post your tastes and we could all discuss/argue about them and share ideas or reccommend music. Myself, I'd like to know more about Dream Theater who i don't know much about at the moment, (I'm from the UK and they're not well publicised here).

Anyhoo, please post if your new or not, and we could all share our musical tastes and add to them.

Cheers,

Tom.

Welcome! I'm into most of the stuff you've mentioned and a lot more...

Group recommendations, okay, let's go per prog sub-genre

1. Art Rock - Rush, Kansas, Anekdoten, (later) Porcupine Tree

2. Canterbury/RIO/Avant-prog - Caravan, National Health, Gong

3. Electronic - Tangerine Dream (there are more of course, but TD are the only ones I'm familiar with to any extent, 'Ricochet' is a great album!)

4.  Experimental/post rock - Mogwai, Radiohead, Godspeed You Black Emperor, Explosions in the Sky, Sigur Ros

5. Fusion - Frank Zappa (although he's a genre all of his own), Alan Holdsworth, Brand X, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Return to Forever

6. Italian Symphonic - Premiata Forneria Marconi (as with Tangerine Dream)

7. Kraut rock - Can, Popol Vuh, Amon Duul II

8. Neo progressive - Marillion, Twelfth Night, Discipline, Pendragon

9. Prog folk - Jethro Tull, Mostly Autmn, Iona, Karnataka

10. Prog metal - Opeth, Dream Theater, Cynic, Symphony X, In the Woods...

11. Psychedelic/space rock - Hawkwind, (early) Porcupine Tree, Gracious, Ozric Tentacles

12. Symphonic prog - Camel, The Flower Kings, Spock's Beard, Focus, Gentle Giant

13. Zeuhl - Magma (as with Tangerine Dream and Premiata Forneira Marconi)

There are mp3s from almost all of these artists available here; there's about 8 Dream Theater mp3s, so you can make up your own mind about them.

And don't worry about the lack of quick replies here, usually you have to wait for a day or two.

Have fun!
