Topic: Music Streaming Services for Mobile Phones Posted: June 01 2011 at 09:55 |
Today I tried out the new Napster iPhone app ... very nice. Napster is a music service available in several countries (US, Canada, UK, Germany last time I checked), and if you subscribe to the Napster To Go plan you can now listen on your iPhone, iPad and Android phone. I'm assuming it's low bitrate (128kbit), but IMO that's totally ok for checking out whether to buy an album.
Another cool service is Audiogalaxy.com ... I mentioned it in another thread several months ago, and their apps (also for iPhone, iPad and Android) have much improved since. Audiogalaxy allows you to stream music from your local computer to your mobile device ... a small helper app is installed on your computer, and it automatically (and quite hassle-free compared to other solutions) trans-codes and streams the music to the app on your phone.
What do you think about those services - and do you know others? There also used to be the last.fm app, but I think they no longer offer streaming.

Still using Subsonic - it has worked brilliantly for me, I can listen in the car using my Droid, and at work using the web interface. My wife uses it everyday on her laptop as well.

The latest I've heard is that you can store your Amazon MP3s in the cloud if you desire, and play them back on your phone using the Amazon MP3 app....Google Music is also emerging, and of course Apple has just announced iCloud.

I'll happily use these services as long as I still get a DRM-free copy of the files when I purchase them - but I'm not going to depend completely on the availability of the cloud. I make an exception for Napster since with that service I'm not purchasing the music in the first place.

Me neither - that's why I run my own cloud. Going a bit further, I would consider using one of the services as long as I would be guaranteed a DRM-free local copy, for my personal media storage.

When the Amazon cloud thing first came out, my old fuddy-duddy wires perked way up. Not only am I no longer buying a hard copy, I don't even have control of the data!!!
I have a big iPod classic, and I basically carry it everywhere with my wallet and phone. There are very few places where I could be streaming that I couldn't be getting better sound just by using my iPod.

You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

I don't like streaming that much but I agree Napster is a good option (owned by my employer by the way ). I really need the physical format so streaming services never will succeed with me. But Napster is very good now that we are at it. I prefer Pandora though it's really a radio not a streaming play-what-you-want service.

My collection is currently 17000+ files, 170+GB. Of course there are mobile players which have that kind of storage capacity, but I much prefer having as few as possible devices to carry around. This is my current situation:
Android Phone (6GB) iPad (32GB) Bluetooth Headset
Most of the storage capacity of the iPad is used for apps and magazines/newspapers. What I like about the combination of Audiogalaxy and Napster is that I have instant access not only to my entire own collection from both the iPad and the Android phone, but also to many, many albums that I don't own (via Napster). I also don't have to synchronize anything when I buy new music ... or download free music, it's all available on my mobile devices as soon as I add it locally.
