Topic: Hidden Vote Count in Polls Posted: May 26 2011 at 14:22 |
Would it be possible to add an option to suppress the viewing of the vote count on polls until a user has voted in a poll? I am just thinking that this might be a way to make polls somewhat more "scientific" by reducing the influence of votes made to make one option win over a second option, even though the fourth option would have been the voter's response if they had not known the current vote count prior to voting. i.e. I prefer Gentle Giant, but because Genesis is beating Pink Floyd and I can't stand Genesis, rather than wasting my vote on Gentle Giant I will vote for Pink Floyd.
I suppose the reality is that this is all in fun and none of the PA polls should really be taken very seriously anyways. And of course, there wouldn't be nothing to stop a poster who has voted from posting in the thread saying c'mon guys you need to vote for Magma because we can't have them lose to Marillion.

Most forums are like this already, so yes, I approve of this idea.

My only thing is that I often don't vote in polls (for lack of knowledge of the entries), and the polls are helpful for finding things I might like to hear.

Maybe we could have a "show" and "hide" results, with "hide" being automatic.

Most forums also have a function where you can give up your vote to see the results

I'd favor andy's option of "hide or see" option, because I often don't want to vote (often lack of sufficient knowlege to have an opinion >> yessss that does happen to me as well), yet I still want to see the results for info's sake!!!

I think the opinions about this may differ. Sinds the end of October newbies are no longer allowed to vote in polls because of this, which surprised some old PA members with a small number of posts.
Anyway, this won't be an improvement, unless the number of votes can be revealed by a mouse click, just like the "read more" on the artists bio pages. Like with the newbie rule, the remedy is worse than the evil.

It would have to be part of the forum code and I don't think it is.

For me "strategical voting" is more fun than simply stating your favourites. Strategical voting also makes you feel the need to post an explanation, which contributes to the debate.

I really have no idea why anyone would have the desire to screw around with a poll by adding a bunch of multiple users in order to make their favorite win, but because there were idiots that felt the need to do this, it ruined the polls for everyone else, and thus the change to exclude newbies from polls. The old a few bad apples ruined the whole bunch scenario.

Neither have I. It is ruinous and idiot behaviour indeed.
