Hi im dave, new member, for me, rock music starts in 1966 and gets better from there, I was born in 1969, too late for the sixties, too young for punk, so I guess that never been culturally wedded to one genre or teh other. I do make the effort to check out new music, but my favourite stuff is the classic undrground of the sixties and early seventies..will continue this thread if any one responds

Hi, currently listening to

(a) about 60 tracks I downloaded from the prog-archives, some of which I already have.

(b) "Gather in the Mushrooms: The Best of the British Acid Folk Underground 1968-74", some duds, but the good ones outweigh the lame ones.

(c) "meridian 1970", compilation from 1970, progressive americana, some incongrous british tracks as well, not really prog I guess, but cool all the same

(d) The Magic Band "21st Century Mirror Man" Live CD and also the Magic Band live on John Peel last summer (home recording, quality fading)

(e) Meic Stephens "Outlander" CD reissue of lost classic, complete with brilliant quality demos

(f) Best track of all time (this month anyway) Comus "the Herald" off the mushrooms compilation (the full Comus CD is in the Post as we speak!)

(g) all time faves (this month anyway!): Jethro Tull "Thich as a Brick", Pink Floyd "Relics" H.P. Lovecraft II, Jefferson Airplane "After Bathing at Baxters" King Crimson "Islands" "Larks Tongues in Aspic" Love "Forever Changes" Television "marquee moon"

Not a purist in any sense, I dont like Coldplay or radiohead, but yesterday I caught myself humming along to natalie imbruglia's bew song. I thought she only did makeup advertisements now...

new here as well- most amazed and impressed with the archives!  the post on civility and forum guiding got me brave enough to post this.......Summmer soltice? of course! no wonder I've been awake for days.....listening to music - natch.   I'm a child of the 60's ,now a doddering boomer-  catching up on artists missed over the  last 35 years.  I knew what I heard on the radio back then was only intermittingly tolerable, noe I know why!  Prog was in  my heart all along------

A child of the 60's? I'm so jealous! We didn't get the 60's over here (Republic of reland) so most children of the 60's fled to better parts (some formed bands, Taste, Dr. Strangely Strange, Nirvana (60's one) etc). Fair play to you for still taking an interest in counter-cultural music and welcome aboard!!!

That's a very interesting choice. "First Utterance" is a true masterpiece. I prefer it to just about anything else released in England. Highly original and enjoyable. I hope you enjoy it.

After really listening to the beautiful creations in this archives, and the web, generally, It seems the artists from the first ,  developed the progressive "form" but were limited in the tech to deliver.    I always loved the first 3 Moody Blues albums[ still have the dusty remains] But then they "evolved" commercially.  NOW,  I almost fell over when 1st hearing Barclay James Harvest.  Why couldn't this music be  available where I was [USA] years ago?   Damn the" powers" that that dictated what we "wanted" --they are still at it!!!  Neoprog -Marillion Arena, IQ, etc. are all new discoveries!  Pendragon brings me back to easier days......Sorry to bore you ..... What was available in your neck of the woods?   .....later.....
