When I click on the link PA Top Prog Albums, there appear 100 studio albums, of which Pain of Salvation's Be is the last with a weighted rating (WR) of 4.0821.
When I modify the restrictions by selecting the years from 1989 to 2010, this album appears at #40 with a WR of 4.1163.

Here are the results of the numbers 91 to 100 in the PA Top Prog Albums list and their rankings in the list with the year restrictions.

Top 100     WR    Modified       WR  Artist              Title
   91   4.1031       19      4.1885  Death               Symbolic
   93   4.0947        7      4.2508  Cardiacs            Sing to God
   94   4.0942       24      4.1616  Arena               Contagion
97   4.0907       18      4.1892  Birds and Buidings  Bantam to Behemoth
  100   4.0821       40      4.1163  Pain of Salvation   Be

To exclude the possibility of an inbetween re-calculation, I requeried after some 15 minutes.
Is the PA Top Prog Albums list a snapshot view from an earlier situation, or is there more than one formula used to calculate the weighted ratings?

I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure the weighted rating changes depending on what albums are included in the chart.  The weighted rating reflects the album's rating in comparison to the number of ratings it has, as well as the ratings and number of ratings of the albums it is being compared to.

So quite right it will be different when you change the Top Album parameters.

I see that the WR changes with varying query restrictions. Yet it seems to me that a random element is introduced when the ordering sequence between albums that participate in different query results varies depending on the restrictions, making the ranking order somewhat unreliable.

Note: I am not familiar with the principles of weighted ratings. Maybe I have to study a bit on it.

Hi all,

Thanks for reporting this. I improved the informations to explain how we proceed to calculate the list.

It is not a bug, the Query Weighted Rating is calculated every query. So the QWR is recalculated every request. This is why the QWR of PAIN OF SALVATION changes every query (if query parameters are modified: years, genres, ...) .

Hope it's clear ?

Please check the updated text info http://www.progarchives.com/top-prog-albums.asp?salbumtypes=1#list and tell me if it's clearer.

^Thanks for the info, M@X. I think it is clear. I'll study the matter of QWR calculation when I have some more time for this. Maybe I give some comments or suggestions afterwards in the "Help us to improve the site"-section.

I went to the 2010 Chart and Enslaved's album had a 3.98 rating from 48 ratings. I rated it a **** and the information updated to show 4.02 from... 47 ratings. Confused How's that possible?

Changing that rating doesn't seem to provoke any error. I rated two other albums right now and it went fine. Maybe I just had a halucination... I'll keep you posted if the issue reappears.
