I love the band, but to be completely honest it mostly comes of as pop garbage to me. Its most certainly not my cup of tea, however, i think that "memories of old days" is one of the most powerfull and emotional songs that Giant ever wrote. But other than that one track, id say its anything but essential.
something pretentious

You're kidding, right? As Old As Your Young, Winning, For Nobody - they all bring to mind Free Hand era GG! Side one might have its poppy moments but compare it to Giant For a Day and then tell me this was a Gentle Giant pop album!

I think it's a good album but not nearly as good as Interview or Free Hand!

I like side 2, the songs are great and typically GG, However, side 1 is weaker. Still some good tunes but nothing special.

I have heard it was good. I've only heard Memories Of Old Days. That song is really good. Again, i here side two is the one you want to hear, much more in the vain of thier earlier stuff. Everyone eles said that so this post was useless

No, the downfall began right here,,,,couple of good songs but WAY to pop... but compared to Giant for a day it's a masterpiece...but I must say that I like Civilian very much...that's not pop() but rock'n'roll

Well, if you wanna dig Gentle Giant, you ought to stay with their masterpieces from the debut-album 'till Playin the fool, they're all masterpieces, IMO....

I agree with you with regard to everything from GG to PtF being masterpieces, flowerchap, but I have to say there's a lot to love on The Missing Piece. Much more than on the bland Civilian.

Not their most consistant album.A couple of 'throwaway' tracks (Two Weeks in Spain,I Betcha Never Thought We Could Do it?)weaken the album.Saying that;I have a soft spot for the album because it was the first album that I bought with my first wage-packet in 1977.

Do 'The Stanley' otherwise I'll thrash you with some rhubarb.
