Please download and tell me what you think!

It's my first thing I've created a thread for, but I've made another one this summer, but it was kind of unfinished and the levels and mixing were terrible.

This was all done in Reason and it's pretty simple, but effective I think. It's a rough mix and I literally just now wrapped up the order of the synths. I'll probably add more synths, automation, and do a lot more mixing and EQing.

Before I try, I have a question: is it post-1989?

Hey... the song is pretty much OK... I hear some limitations in the quality of the sounds, but I guess it's just the midi sounds. I have to say the song is cool, very mellow and moody, it's remaind me of a sad part of some Old Anime Cartoon. I would like to have a little more "wet" lead piano, this one is too "dry". But in the rest, I think it's OK and I know you notice the places were some instruments had too much volume. Nice track man...!!!

All did in Reason you said? I still can't make it work well still... it's my sound card... Angry

The piano and the first synth is are basically the factory settings on the preset--meaning I basically haven't altered their composition either in the synth module or through auxilary effects. I just discovered that you can have automation for synths and not just the mixer, meaning that I can automate the filter frequency, resonance, wave types and all that.

I don't think I'll be changing the structure of the song much. I was going for something Eno-esque, establishing the tune, building it over time, having it encompass one aspect of mood with a simple melody, and not having it wear out it's welcome, which I think it definitely would if I extended it. I'm currently toying with beefing up and varying the piano melody, but I think the straight octaves are very effective and when I try to beef them up, it loses that impact.

And yeah as far as the levels are concerned it's something to really work out. I think when I added the filter automation on the second synth, for some reason it boosted the amplitude a lot on certain strikes. It was irritating.

Mostly, I'm going to be concerned with customizing the synth sounds a bit more so it has a less factory-preset feel. The reverb and other effects devices on Reason are pretty awesome. Maybe not Pro Tools $1,000 effects package awesome, but damn good enough for making a decent DIY electronic affair.
