Like I said earlier, the first series is similar (though not identical) to book one but it's the second series which is really significantly different.

The later 3 series were all done retrospectively after Adams' death and, to my mind, are significantly inferior to the original 70's series. They're pretty much just straight adaptations of the novels and are pretty skippable.

The first Dirk Gently novel is a must for any Adams fan, as is Last Chance to See.
