    Posted: May 26 2010 at 21:44
5/26/2010 - London, UK - After 20 plus years, UK classic rock legends Wishbone Ash have released a new single, "Reason To Believe", which is creating a huge buzz amongst the music press and fans of the band worldwide. The single is part of an EP that also features an album edit from the forthcoming CD and two superb remixes which stand out on their own. It is now available for download on iTunes. "Reason to Believe sums up what we are all about," says founding member and band leader Andy Powell, "both in terms of the ethos of the lyric and in the melodic nature of the song, which is itself enhanced by our classic twin lead guitar sound".

Founded in England in 1969, Wishbone Ash has released more than 30 albums to date, and has been touted as one of the first dual-guitar rock bands. Rolling Stone magazine counted Ash guitarists Andy Powell and Ted Turner among the world’s top 20 best of all time. The group’s 1972 classic release, Argus, was voted Album Of The Year by readers of UK’s Melody Maker and NME. It was remixed and reissued in 2002 as a special 30th anniversary edition and consequently was the fastest selling reissue in MCA’s history. Powell’s name is synonymous with the Gibson Flying V. Over the years, he has been prominently featured in such notable publications as Guitar, Guitarist and Vintage Guitar. He has also recorded with the likes of George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Stewart Copeland and Renaissance.

In 2009 Wishbone Ash embarked on an intensive 6-month tour plan taking the band 'round to July 2010 in celebration of their 40th anniversary. The band will be performing three dates in South Africa (May 28, May 30, June 1). A USA West Coast tour is planned along with two June shows in Tokyo, Japan. For a complete list of tour dates and venues, visit www.wishboneash.com/tourdates . The new DVD Wishbone Ash 40 - Live in London was released in Europe on Oct. 10, 2009. This 40th anniversary show from Shepherd's Bush Empire was produced by RCN TV, the same team who made the highly acclaimed Wishbone Ash Live in Hamburg DVD. Recently a new Wishbone Ash compilation CD called Sometime World has been released on MCA Records. Andy Powell was recently interviewed on the Johnnie Walker Show on BBC Radio 2 for a special called 'Sounds of the '70s'. Powell was also interviewed by John Wilcox for Progsheet in which he discussed tracks from the legendary Wishbone Ash album Argus and can be accessed at www.progsheet1.hypermart.net/argus.html

This single is from Andy Powell's Wishbone Ash, not to be confused with Martin Turner's Wishbone Ash!!

I saw Andy's version a few years ago, they were brilliant!!   They've had a revamped lineup since.  Right now they are touring South Africa, they never seem to stop touring.

That's right cstack3 ... not to be confused either with the real Wishbone Ash which long since disappeared into rock music history.

This single by the Andy Powell Band (which projects itself as Wishbone Ash without the agreement of the other Wishbone Ash stakeholders Turner/Turner/Upton) is a decent enough little rocker but let's face it you only have the vague suspicion that it might have anything to do with Wishbone Ash because it has a harmony guitar intro grafted on to it. There is nothing else particularly to commend this. It is a million miles from the band that did Argus etc. But then it isn't remotely the same band ...

Question (a) When is a band not a band?

Answer (a) When it is a name only...

Question (b) How can a band which ceased activity in 1994 still be around, without reforming?

Answer (b) It can't. What you have instead is another band of musicians led by an original member who sees no issue of trading as the former entity of which he is the only connection.

Question (c) Is that really a problem?

Answer (c) It is if you happen to be one of the other originals who resents the co-opting of the name without seeking your permission first.

I can't think of another example of this where one original member of a band founds a completely new band and then tries his luck by christening it by the name of his previous former band. Had that individual acquired the rights via gift, purchase or legal settlement owned by the other former stake-owning members thus enabling him to justifiably do this - that would be one thing ... but if he didn't - then what does it amount to I ask you?

There are other bands (Uriah Heep or Deep Purple for example), performing with only one original member, still intact you might argue. That is true - but these bands have apparently all sat down and sorted out the various settlements needed to enable those no longer involved to retire content that they haven't been ripped off. Has this happened in the case of Wishbone Ash. Well, seemingly not since messrs Turner, Turner and Upton dispute the legitimacy of Mr. Powell's right to use the name without some caveat (in the way Martin Turner himself does). That much is published fact:

And

It is a real shame that this business continues as it does. If The Andy Powell Band were to atleast caveat itself as Andy Powell's Wishbone Ash as cstack3 elaborates then the good name and legacy of Wishbone Ash would not be continually tarnished as it is ...

So Wishbone Ash HAS NOT released a new single. The Andy Powell Band has - sadly bearing the name of the real non-existing band. The last legitimate Wishbone Ash single was Cosmic Jazz back in 1989.

Well, I wasn't expecting the Spanish Inquisition!!

I could care less what a band calls itself, as long as the music is decent.  I downloaded this latest single and found it quite uninteresting.

The internal squabbles of these band don't interest me in the least, as a discerning listener and fan of the original band, I can make up my own mind.   Too many of these bands have broken apart (Yes being the latest), with members claiming to be the "true voice of Yes" (Jon Anderson) or whatever.

They should just pick a name from one of their favorite compositions and let it stand with that.  Andy Powell's "Warriors" or "Argus" would be fine with me.   Wishbone Ash ceased to exist many years ago.

Ghostmojo is wrong. The band is called Wishbone Ash. That is what it says on their albums. The band has never ceased to exist, just as the OP on this thread says. Ghostmojo doesn't like the fact the this version of the band uses the name Wishbone Ash, but that is their name. It is what is. They are still making outstanding music

Illuminations by WISHBONE ASH was released in 1996

Bona Fide by WISHBONE ASH  was released in 2003

Clan Destiny by WISHBONE ASH  was released in 2006.

The Power of Eternity by WISHBONE ASH was released in 2007.

All of the above offerings are a great mix of the old WISHBONE ASH sound and a dynamic , progressive sound.

The brand X version of this great band is a bogus outfit called martin tuner's wa. martin turner is the former bass player, who quit the band numerous times and now wants to cash in the continuity of those who have stuck it out..martin turner's bogus outfit will never record anything new. Their main goal is to create confusion and tear down the hard work of the real deal.

Yes, WISHBONE ASH has a great new single and they are moving forward.

AHA!!! My old sparring partner from the MTWA forum has picked up the scent! LOL Welcome aboard Rich!!!

Quote Illuminations by WISHBONE ASH was released in 1996

Bogus band - bogus album - doesn't matter a jot what is printed on the sleeve - but contains some good music (largely due to Roger Filgate's compositional talent)

Quote Bona Fide by WISHBONE ASH  was released in 2003

Bogus band - bogus album - also doesn't matter a jot what is printed on the sleeve - but again contains some quite good music (largely due to Ben Granfelt's compositional talent)

Quote Clan Destiny by WISHBONE ASH  was released in 2006

Bogus band - bogus album - once more doesn't matter a jot what is printed on the sleeve - mainly contains weak  music - the odd good track - a fall in standard from Bona Fide

Quote The Power of Eternity by WISHBONE ASH was released in 2007

Bogus band - bogus album - the charade continues and doesn't matter what is printed on the sleeve - mainly contains awful music - and is an outrage to even be considered a Wishbone ash album it is that bad ... as for the dreadful cover

Quote All of the above offerings are a great mix of the old WISHBONE ASH sound and a dynamic , progressive sound

No they're not. The first two are the best. The first is a mid-atlantic sounding forgery - a WA by numbers if you will. The second is quite strong but more like an AP solo album in the style of WA. The other two are best avoided unless you are short of ashtrays ...

Brand X were a band in the mid 70s with Phil Collins.

To call MT the bass player is a tactic employed regularly by APWA zealots and was started by AP himself who couldn't bring himself to even use Martin's name. It is a ploy to demean and downplay Mart's significance ... as in 'only the bass player'. As the well-educated fans on this forum will know - MT wrote, sang and led the band through its classic period - a time which AP just strummed in the background.

AP's version of WA is like Ringo going out with three sidemen and calling it The Beatles Cry

Martin Turner runs his own legacy version of WA - but unlike AP he is honest in saying what it is. MT has every legal and moral right to use the name of a band he formed in 1969 with Steve Upton. It was he that invited AP and TT to join. MT didn't quit numerous times. That is a proven lie. He left under duress the first time and was pushed out twice - not the same as quitting.

Quote Yes, WISHBONE ASH has a great new single and they are moving forward.

As another poster put it - Wishbone Ash are dead. It's just Mr. Powell who drags out the carcass filled with nobody/wannabee/session players and pretends it is a continuation ... wait for the innevitable 'he never left and has been flying the flag / keeping the flame for 40 years' bollocks that will follow this post.

Martin, Ted and Steve are united in pursuing and reclaiming their legitimate interests. The whole thing is currently in the hands of lawyers. Very sad that one man would do this to his former friends/bandmates...

As for the term the REAL DEAL - never has there been such a ludicrously false promotional term applied to a sham tribute band as that phrase. It has been universally derided (even by APWA fans) and is both sad and laughable in the extreme. APWA illustrated this nonsense with a pack of playing cards with each of the band (which Paul Henderson of Classic Rock called a tribute/karaoke affair) shown as characters. Oddly enough though - you don't get four jokers in a pack!!! Wink

As for cashing in on the $$$$$$$$$$ that APWA generates - let's be honest. Neither band is making it big out of all of this. APWA have done well for a decade playing Martin's, Ted's and Laurie's songs. But who would you rather see do it? Andy struggle through MT's creations with his non-singing sidekicks or MT sing his own material with his fine band - all of whom sing? No contest. In the absence of Wishbone Ash - which no longer exists ... go and see Martin Turner's Wishbone Ash - especially this weekend at the High Voltage Festival in London where he will be joined on stage by Ted Turner Cool
