Just received the following, which should make MO fans happy:

THE MAHAVISHNU PROJECT:

Interpreting the music of John McLaughlin & The Mahavishnu Orchestra

Gregg Bendian, drums        Pete McCann, guitar        Steve Hunt, keyboards

Rob Thomas, violin            Stephan Crump, bass

“Just a little note of appreciation for what you are bringing back to life. This musical period was the beginning of finding my own way in music, and to hear you guys playing those tunes in such an unbelievable way is quite amazing. Great job!! Keep up the good work.”
-John McLaughlin’s email to MahavishnuProject.com (Oct. 2002)

GREGG BENDIAN PRODUCING MAHAVISHNU ORCHESTRA SET:

Mahavishnu Project drummer and leader Gregg Bendian is co-producing (with the great Bob Belden) “The Mahavishnu Orchestra: Live in Cleveland 1972” for Sony/Legacy.  Sony is planning on releasing this classic show in the late summer of 2004 as a bonus disc to be paired with “The Inner Mounting Flame”.

Belden is a big fan of The Mahavishnu Project and asked Gregg to come on board for the Cleveland project - first as a consultant and soon after, as co-producer.  The two went into Sony Studios with engineers Mark Wilder and Richard King in February and mixed the concert from an old 1-inch, 8-track reel.

Gregg will also be helping Elliott Sears (Mahavishnu road manager and agent for Jan Hammer and Jerry Goodman) put together the liner notes for the package, which will include interviews with each of the band members and some of the key protagonists of the jazz-rock fusion era, such as Stanley Clarke, Carlos Santana and Dickey Betts.

Mr. Belden has now asked Gregg to oversee the archiving of many hours of Mahavishnu Orchestra live tapes that have not yet been digitally transferred or properly annotated.  This will be an ongoing project aimed at someday making way for a Mahavishnu Orchestra live box-set.  (There’s a lot of stuff in the vault there, and even Sony don’t know what they have!).  More on this as things progress.

COMING IN MAY: "MAHAVISHNU PROJECT: PHASE 2" (double live CD set)
