As shameful as it is to admit, I've only listened to King Crimson's Lizard album once. I remember it being very hard to get into (as with most prog rock albums, it takes multiple listens to truly appreciate them because of how complex they are), except for the first song which I remembered being good. Anyway, I started listening to it again, and man, "Cirkus" is one of the awesomest rock songs I've ever heard! Really beautiful melody, great vocals, and sinister mellotron work. What a great song! I'm anxious to listen to the title track and see if it gets better the second time as well...

Yeah, "Cirkus" rocks my socks.  Personally, I think the title track is the highlight of the album, but the whole album is a masterpiece.

However, if you thought the studio version was good, check out this live version:

Cirkus is (dark)magic an so is Lizard. The trio inbetween those is pretty great too, but the opening track and the sidelong epic are my faves.
Over land and under ashes
In the sunlight, see - it flashes
Find a fly and eat his eye
But don't believe in me
Don't believe in me
Don't believe in me

I love Cirkus, Lizard and Lady of the dancing water.
The other 2 songs are good, but the vocals spoil them a bit

Lizard is an awesome album allthrough, up there as my fave KC album with Islands.

Cirkus is one of their great opening tracks.  There is so much going on in the song that, really, I've never tired of hearing it.  Those mammoth Mellotron tri-tones, Fripps acoustic guitar madness, the horns.  All special, even in Crimson's discography.
Can you tell me where we're headin'?
Lincoln County Road or Armageddon.

Even though Cirkus is OK (and is a major look towards future Belew Era KC), on this album my love goes to Prince Ruppert Awakes and Bolero.

Yep, Cirkus is one of those Crim tracks that seems to get overlooked when their best work is being discussed. Apart from the thrilling 'police siren' riff at the song's climactic points there is also the bizarre and dislocated/broken arpeggios on acoustic guitar that Fripp throws under the verses which even to this day, I cannot begin to understand how they work so well.

I guess that Haskell's vocals polarize opinion about side one of Lizard but for me, I love the texture and intimate humility imbued in his voice (though most of my favourite vocalists can't really sing 'properly')

Cirkus is definitely the highlight of Lizard for me, and I think very highly of that entire album. Certainly an undercited gem in the stellar KC discography.

Lizard is one of my favourite KC albums and the title track is truly amazing... It's probably the only KC album that I loved on first listen. Still warming up to some of the songs on Islands even though I've listened to it hundreds of times.
