hey, my name is nicolās.

i`m from Argentina, 17 yaers old and a lover of difficult harmonies, good melodies and "complicated" music.

i`m a bassist (also drummer, gruitarist and singer but... not too much).

my english is ... well, with a little help of you guys maybe you can understand what i want to say.

my favorite bands are: yes, crimson, jethro, genesis, mars volta, beatles, jethro, gentle giant, vdgg and all the classic stuff (except floyd... so.. predictable!). i love italian prog too (le orme, premiata, banco, etc)

i also enjoy jazz and fusion (brand x, weather report, zappa, chick corea, etc) and classical music (stravinsky, bach, beethoven, mussorsgky and a lot of russians)

i just wanna have a good time here and learn a lot about the music that i love.

(sorry for my english!)

and you and i and the musical box and the lamb lies down on broadway and itīs... hello baby

Welcome young one. Good to see teens that are into good music. I was gonna suggest Gentle Giant before I saw you listed them as a favorite. After all, they embody "difficult harmonies, good melodies and complicated music".

Three Friends is a sentimental favorite of mine too since it was the first album I owned and really liked by GG. I bought Octopus many years before, but never really gave it a chance to sink in, as its kind of the first GG album where they have developed their hyper-counterpoint, ultra-complex sound that is not as immediately appealing (in my opinion) to newcomers. I loved Three Friends on first listen, however, and Schooldays is one of my fave GG tracks also.

HURRAAAAAH!!!

I say this because we share almost identical musical tastes!  Six of the prog bands you listed as your favorites are in my own top ten.  However, I do like Pink Floyd.

I love Russian classical music too!  Where would we be without the innovative works of composers such as Shostakovich, Mussorgsky and Prokofiev?

Also, fusion is my new obsession.  Chick Corea is a GENIUS, especially with Return to Forever.  I'm looking for some Weather Report, too.  I've heard that there's some great ARP2600 work in there, and me being a keyboards freak, I'd love this!

Do you have Miles Davis's Bitches Brew?  I don't, but I'm looking for it.  Both Chick Corea and Josef Zawinul play keys on this album, along with Herbie Hancock from the Headhunters.  John McGlauchlin (excuse my spelling), guitarist of the Mahivishnu Orchestra (mentioned by Bhits), plays here as well.

With regard to jazz, what do you think of Thelonious Monk?

i just canīt get into thelonious monk.. but i respect him. maybe in some years i will enjoy it.

nice to be with everyone. ive been browzing the site for awhile and finally decided to join. i'm 16 and dig all prog, though i'm beginning to dislike mars volta more and more as the days go by. and i can only listen to genesis about once a season, though i respect them a lot.

i dig yes the most of all prog (best arrangements i've ever heard outside o classical music) but tull, floyd and zappa live forever in my book as well.

i also dig dream theater. i know they may not be as well recieved as other bands, probably because of the whole "metal" element, but if you dig them too, let me know.

and let me pose a question for further discussion if i may: if you are familiar with the flaming lips (and by familiar i mean you have listend to not only their new stuuf but the old 80's stuff as well), would you consider them prog?Confused

imagine going to radio class and having to be a dj and presell the upcoming green day song 3 times in one day. and you realize why i like prog so much

Hello to you Stonebeard. Have fun and don't worry, at least you have good taste, even though you can't promote it on your radio...

Welcome to a fellow bass player and Yes fan. You must be a very nice person.

And your English is fine! (but mine isn't because I've just started a sentence with 'and').
