In celebration of their 1969 formation, the English progressive rock heroes Renaissance, are embarking on a 40th Anniversary Concert Tour. Annie Haslam and Michael Dunford have come together with some great musicians to mark this special milestone. The mainstream Renaissance lineup is most well known for their rich symphonic textures, stunning vocals and poetic lyrics. Their style mixed classical progressions with poetry and blended it with elements of rock, jazz and folk, often embodying hauntingly beautiful and international themes. After a long period apart, several members reunited to record an album of all new material which was released in 2001 and followed by a double 'live' album to commemorate their British and Japanese tour later that year. Numerous 'live' albums and various retrospectives with rare material have also emerged in recent times...

Well, that's quite a big surprise. Hopefully European dates (particularly Dutch) will follow...

It looks like several more dates have been added to the tour - check the hyperlink in the first post on this thread.
Does anyone know if more dates are going to be added? Love to see a New England show added - if not, I still might drive to Albany or Rochester. |

I got this alert too. I hope they come a bit closer to my area.
I love the fact that you (Mr. Metal) are the one putting this out there David. Did you get a chance to meet Annie at NEARfest? She's a really great lady.

The reason there is no show on the 10th is because Tom Brislin is doing a solo performance at Calprog. Flies in that morning flies out that night. Dedicated!
I will also bet there will be no shows out of the north east. If you draw a circle around the area they are playing it isn't very big. 373 miles from top to bottom.

Definitely (though we don't go to too many shows, but ever since I moved to the US, I've been to quite a lot by my standards). Anyway, we're both looking forward to this show tonight! The setlist for previous shows was: Prologue Carpet Of The Sun Midas Man Running Hard Black Flame Northern Lights Ocean Gypsy Things I Don't Understand Mother Russia encore: Ashes Are Burning |

Back from the show, it was spectacular. The musicians were all very good (the bass player in particular was stellar) and the music was warm and rich sounding, Annie's voice was wonderful.
The venue was nice (Concert Hall inside the Society for Ethical Culture on 2w 64th street in Manhattan), we had good seating with space on both sides; the turnout was quite impressive, almost full (say 95-97%) and the crowd extremely enthusiastic. The acoustic were ok, but the one keyboard was not heard well on our side and the drums sounded a bit too much in the background in the mix (and the bass was very much in the front of the mix, though I did appreciate it). The band went on at 9pm after a short warm up by Jann Klose (I think that's his name) which was only himself singing with an acoustic guitar. Annie went up bear foot and the rest of the band seemed very happy to be there and all smiling. The setlist for previous shows was like the previous ones: Prologue Carpet Of The Sun Midas Man (not a song I like too much, but very well played) Running Hard (a little glitch there on the opening keyboards part, but soon rectified and went on smoothly) Black Flame Northern Lights Ocean Gypsy Things I Don't Understand (really great arrangement, they put a lot of emotion into this one) Mother Russia encore: Ashes Are Burning The encore was fabulous - great solos of the two keyboardists and bassist (again fantastic playing). Really an emotional peak. There were some points where Annie's voice seem to not attain that high notes, but all in all, she was fabulous and I closed my eyes at some points and it sounded like her voice from the albums. If I, that don't like live shows, came out with a smile on my face, that means something! Edited by avestin - October 10 2009 at 00:11 |

I forgot to mention, Annie seemed unsure which albums two or three in the setlist songs were from when she introduced them.
There was a funny moment when she introduced the Black Flame, and said something like: "this is another song from Novella"; as she said that she was looking at Michael Dunford, who nodded No with his head and told her: "you have three guesses", to which she promptly replied: "Turn of the Cards". They gave short introductions before each song (except Prologue that they simply went on to play as they got on the stage) and also introduced the musicians halfway through the show. |
