I haven't heard PoS yet, but aren't they similar to Symphony X ? I like them, but just I'm not sure if I'll like them too. Porcupine Tree, it's weird band. Very well talented, very important in prog world, but one thing keeps me still wondering. They occupy one whole side of musical genres. You know, they can play anything from almost pop rock sounds, through heavy, psychedelia, ambient. And this "Jupiter Island" is not my favourite one. But "Lightbulb Sun" is. Ayreon, I've just written review on 01010101 (bad spelling ? :-D ), well, at least on first half of this monstrous album. What about this, is it helpful ? Exclude these bands you already know and choose some you could like: http://www.progarchives.com/top-prog-albums.asp?ssubgenres=19&salbumtypes=1&syears=&scountries=&sminratings=10&smaxratings=0&sminavgratings=0&smaxresults=250&x=73&y=12#list |

There's a point where "avant-garde" and "experimental" becomes "terrible" and "pointless,"

thanx for suggestion!
there are much differences between POS and SX,maybe the former is more complex ,conceptual and hard to get into.As to Porcupine tree,i like their early albums like 《up the down stairs》~.
and i saw the site you suggested,it's great for the newbie like me!
Beardfish?i havent heard them yet.i will do it soon!thanx!

Welcome! I see you like some prog metal - you should definitely try Vangough's Manikin Parade. I think it's amazing! You may also like Riverside (but you most likely already know that band).

Don't know how much it would be your cup of tea, but have you tried Maudlin of the Well and Kayo Dot? The free Maudlin album download is good and very accessible:

King Crimson. My favourite is Larks' Tongues in Aspic, but perhaps it would better for you to try Red. Since DT is at the top of your list, they did a cover of King Crimson's "Larks' Tongues in Aspic Part II". KC's original: DT's version: |
