Back in 2003 I joined a prog website which shall remain nameless. For the most part the area that I live in seems to breed southern rock or Led Zeppelin fans and all age groups as well. Never meeting anyone to converse with for years regarding the subject matter of prog, except the occasional person who may have heard of YES but doesn't know or care to discuss any interest points about the group, I would often find myself staring at the floor when hearing the same conversations about music at recitals or when shopping in music stores.
So I joined a prog site which I felt would bring me closer to an environment of people like myself. Out of touch with society as a whole, doesn't pay attention to what goes on in the media, feels a bit jaded with aspects to prog due to the mileage on my wheels, I felt like Eddie Murphy(in one of his many films) with that stupied smile on his face when he is pretending to like something and on the inside he is empty and looking for an exit. I posted a few threads on the site, as I was never much at starting up a conversation, but nevertheless the type of responses that I received were all negative and provoking at best. It was a mixed bag of people which is fine within itself but not with this particular experience.

First you would have a person that would not be too informative about prog, responding in a assured manner regarding a neo-prog band . Stating that neo-prog is the ultimate. But then instead of realizing the importance of innovators, a statement would be directed at my generation(who I could care less about) saying that I as a person with my molded old ways are a thing of the past and that I should move foward. This is missing the point for sure as it has nothing to do with the generation of people or music I grew up with. It has everything to do with conversing about history and having an open mind about it. I have listened to WHITE WILLOW and enjoyed them. They are certainly not from 1972 are they?

Then along comes a person who is from my generation that is so jaded or pompous and posts' an answer to a thread that might go something like this: I would much rather listen to Alan Holdsworth's guitar playing today then praise what he did on Soft Machine Bundles as he was only developing his playing at that point. Hello? I am sorry but his improv on Bundles was universal. What are we talking about here? or a comment like Steve Hackett is not a real guitar player. Maybe you don't prefer his electric playing but don't make an ignorant statement like that when you know darn well that he studied classical style which takes great discipline.

So you had basically 2 groups of people that were for the most part rude and provoking. So I was ignored. Being a person that wants to hear others viewpoints (for educational purposes), with this site I found myself swimming in a swamp from hell. So I found Progarchives which seems more enjoyable and a better class of people socially. I feel interested in reading the threads here. It's great to hear what people have to say about Zappa, Hancock, and many others.

^^

Good to hear it - I still haven't run into anyone rude or confronting in a mean or bullying way on PA, and I'm happy for that!

You usually won't get ignored either

Unless by p0mt3....
