Topic: Any prog fans in OKC area? Posted: May 07 2005 at 22:01 |
Hi, I live in Oklahoma City and cannot seem to connect with any prog/psychedelic fans in the area. I play guitar and synthesizer and am looking for like minds to play or talk music. Reply or PM if interested.

Hey Ankaret,
I was in Denver last month. Do you have a band? If so do you 'tour', as it were, or play locally in Denver. I only ask about touring because some people I know and I are interested in putting on some kind of festival, for lack of a better term, and are looking for bands on similar wave-lengths to perform. Also, do you ever go to Jerry's Record Exchange on Colfax (near the Capitol Building)? I scored some interesting stuff there.
Cheers!

Oh man, that sounds really awesome.
I do have somewhat of a band, though until quite recently we've played more of a progressive death metal style, but since about a month ago Ive been writing all new material which you could definitely tie into prog if anything, and although Im waiting to finish writing and making a demo of this new stuff before I show it to the other guys and rehearse it, I think that festival idea is really awesome and I know my band would be totally up for something like that (though we've never actually played a show before, but I could record for you a rehearsal or send you some demos to see if we would fit the bill at all). But this newer stuff contains much more keyboards and mellotrons, though the main structures are driven by guitars still.
But that festival thing sounds like the coolest idea ever. If you were to do it somewhere in Colorado, you should really see if CARS (Colorado Art Rock Society) can sponsor it and book a place for it etc, because I know there's really a lack of prog events going on here, and they seem pretty cool, I know they're sponsoring the Porcupine Tree show coming up here etc, so I dont know, give me more details about this festival, please!

Oh, and about the record shop, I haven't been to that particular one, but my favorite two record shops in Denver are Twist&Shout and Wax Trax. They're both somewhat closer to downtown, but they have a lot of stuff and I always come out of their with a few new classic rock/prog records.

Thanks for the information about CARS, I will contact them just to start dialog. The event here is only in the talking-about-it stage. I am from Portland originally, and so the music scene here seems to me to be non-existant, at least on a musician-to-musician cooperation level. I will let you know if anything happens with the festival, and I am going to check out whether Porcupine Tree will be coming to a venue near me.
I visited Wax Trax while I was there, but since I no longer have a tuntable, I did not purchase anything. The place I mentioned has thousands of records and CD's, incredible stuff. I have never seen so many Stockhausen recordings in one place. Great prog CD selection, as well.

Sounds good radiognome, just remember, if it's within a day's driving distance, count me in for that festival!!!
I actually picked up some great stuff from TwistnShout today, I got a few Gentle Giant LP's as well as some VDGG and finally found James Gang first album on vinyl. But from the sounds of it, I might just have to check out that place you're talking about.
