Sanny Denny's got a fantastic voice, but I'm no fan of Fairport. Liege and Lief is considered their peak, so why not. With Pentangle; Basket of Light is brilliant, but Cruel Sister's got the titletrack (a perfect ballad, in the original meaning of the term) and the epic Jack Orion.

I always find it very interesting when a metalhead dives in the real prog. I'm not a true metalhead myself but like it a lot. In fact I knew metal and hard rock (and also classic rock) sooner than prog and then it's a very interesting experience to find out about prog.
While you're at it (and I would really recommend to you to check out all seven great Genesis albums !) I would certainly not hesitate to do the same thing with Yes. Close to the Edge is a must have, simple as that and you also should be aware of the Gates of Delirium masterpiece which is present on Relayer.

It's strange, I used to find the old genesis and all of that outdated-sounding and the like until it all just clicked in: it's really great music, and although it's not polished with today's recording methods, it's beautiful and ingenious.
Any other recommendations for CDs I should buy? I already have Genesis' Foxtrot and Selling England, and planning on getting 'In The Court Of The Crimson King.' very soon

I'm curious which one you have obtained ! Eloy's career can be devided in three parts actually. Most important is their seventies era (does that sound familiar ?), the period of their (near) masterpieces.
The eighties followed in which they changed drastically, as so many progbands they turned much more accessible. In the nineties they turned back in their old style a bit but also some features of the eighties were still there in their last couple of albums.
Ocean ('77) is their magnum opus to most proggers though I prefer Silent Cries and Mighty Echoes ('79).

I've been listening to Zappa all week .. only a few intermissions with Riverside, Magma, Fermata, The Lonely Bears, and a mood setting listen to Univers Zero's "Heresie" (watched a horror film)

Hi,
I only have one request ...
ALL of the music that you want to listen to ... and learn from is not about a 3 minute song or 5 minute song.
If you are going to learn to listen to "prog", the first thing that you have to let go is the iTunes mentality ... 10 second listen and you figure you know it all! Or worse ... you heard it all!
Any, prog thing mentioned here, is way more than that ... and for that I want to throw out a suggestion ... you must give yourself a number ... 1 hour let's say ... that you must sit and listen to a bunch of work for any given band.
IF, at the end of an hour you don't like Gong, I'm ok with that, but I bet that you will be able to explain a lot better why you don't care for it than the majority of fans and trolls in this board.
Things like GONG, MAGMA, AMON DUUL 2 and many others, mixed things to an incredible extent and in the case of these 3 bands, they are so distinctive and original as to be highly different and as such, listening to these takes a massive amount of ear tuning ... your ear is not used to listening to stuff that is so different, thus a lot of people tend to not listen to them with any appreciation ... I mean someone that liskes Metalicca listening to Magma and enjoying it? ... I highly doubt it. But then I can listen to Hawkwind and put Magma on right after it ... so I'm weird also!
Give it a chance, is all that I/we can ask ... there is a lot of far out stuff over there, and no one would go out of their way to do something different if there was no reason to do it, or wanting to do something special ... and meaningful.

I just happened to pick up several The Strawbs albums on my trip to NearFest... I've been curious about them also, up to this I have their latest (which I didn't like at all) and Grave New World. "Grave New World" is very acoustic-based folk prog ..
I'll listen to the vinyl of these this weekend and let you know about the following:

Bursting at the Seams
Ghosts
NoMadness
Deep Cuts
Let me know how the other bands go, really like Echolyn also ..

Frances is a great start for TMV then if that works for you try Amputechture that''s my favourite.Lots of sax  Kid A is also good but I would said ok computer to be honest.

I'm enjoying you by gong.I've listened to the album about 5 times so far and tracks that struck me straight away were Master Builder and isle of everywhere,I've listened to flying teapot a couple of times I have a feeling that may take more work.But it would be great to get educated on them,their playing my city in november.

I believe I am going to acquire something from these bands very soon:

Haven't heard that to tell you the truth, but from what I heard from the 'Flo & Eddie' era, I barely liked something. Though got to admit not a big fan of experimental stuff. You might already know my typical suggestions for Zappa, but I'll suggest them again  . The 2 live albums, Zappa in New York and Roxy & Elsewhere should be no dissapointments. (except maybe for the lyrics for you )
