Topic: Back in N.Y.C. - GENESIS (of course) Posted: April 06 2005 at 17:57 |
I confess, I'm in love with this little ditty on "The Lamb" from Peter
and the boys. By far it's the most listened-to song on my Media Player.
By a 2:1 margin no doubt
I also find myself singing the lyrics out loud when I'm out of the house with the earphones on Not good when it's the chorus Raping the Porcupine whaaaa?
Besides being one of the best songs in which to convert non-GENESIS
types into Gabriel-worshippers, there is just absolute so much going on
in this damn song! The energy, the crazy lyrics, the amazing
musicianship, the rude chorus...and when Tony does his crescendo, deep
note thingy at 04:17-04:19 into the song, YIKES! Powerful stuff.
Just thought I'd put that out there. The world needs more GENESIS.

I think you're right
I don't like too much the vocal at the begginig, but I like so much the part of the porcupine ("He said I have none to blame but me" or something like that). It's just amazing like you said. Sometimes, I put four and five times this chorus. And the end of the song is incredible with the begginig of hearless heart!
But what about the Tony's solo on Riding the scree , and the lamia (I think one of the best song of thjis cd)!!!

Back in N.Y.C. to Hairless Heart is one of my favorite prog song transitions. Very good indeed.

Live version is INCREDIBLE, it becomes so much better id say that the lice back in n.y.c. is the best genesis song by a longshot.

The Lamb in my opinion is the best prog album ever conjured from the elements of this godforsaken earth.
The carpet crawlers and chamber of 32 doors are gems too.

Even when I'm a Genesis hardcore fan, The Lamb has never been among my 3 favorite Genesis albums, maybe because it has to be listened from start to end and rarely have time to do so.
The only track I can listen out of it's natural context is In the Cage, never get tired of it.

Agree that Lamb is less consistent than the three (maybe even four) preceeding studio albums ... the individual gems that still out in my mind are The Lamia, In The Cage and Anyway (which is hardly ever mentioned) ... what a beautiful, beautiful song!
But there are gorgeous moments in many other places, and there's something so cool and vicious about Back In NYC.

"Death to Utopia! Death to faith! Death to love! Death to hope?" thunders the 20th century. "Surrender, you pathetic dreamer.”
"No" replies the unhumbled optimist "You are only the present."

The Lamb has aged well. Timeless and classic.

It's really good. I think its got a 7-meter beat too (7/4 or 7/8). Either that or 4/4 in a 7/4 disguise. Not my favorite on the album, that'd be "In the Cage" or the title track or "Fly on a Windshield" or "Carpet Crawlers". You know, actually, I love the entire first side of that album. Side two sucks.

= Nahhhh, lighten up, ol boy! Life's too short not to just blast "Back in NYC" or the great title track now and then!
I already KNOW the context -- I'm buzzed -- cut to the chase....
You'd drive me mad if we had to listen to full albums or nothing!
Still, I know we'd be fast friends!

Hi amigo, glad to see you back outside of the darknes
Back to the topic, the only two albums I have to listen from start to end are The Lamb and Quadrophenia, don't ask me why, because it's not only the concept (which I still don't fully understand).
But normally I listen In The Cage, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway and Back in NYC alone.
Iván
BTW: Just listening In the Cage, what a powerful song!!!!!!, creates a claustrophobic pain that I enjoy.

Buenos Nachos, mi amigo!
Psst: Quadrophenia was my "coming of age album," my anthem, my life's soundtrack, age 13. The Who rule!
Still, sometimes I just listen to sides 3 & 4....

I love this song. The part about the porcupine is my favorite part because it's so out of place. In fact, it's my signature. The song is basically Gabriel just ranting and yelling and it's really freaking cool. He puts so much passion into it.
|
As I cuddled the porcupine he said I had none to blame but me. Held my heart deep in hair. Time to shave, shave it off, it off. No time for romantic escape when your fluffy heart is ready for rape.
