some other pictures here ...
It was a really good and technically perfect performance by the Allan Holdsworth Trio featuring Chad Wackerman (drums) and Jimmy Johnson (bass) taking place at the tiny little and sold out venue 'Bunker Ulmenwall' in Bielefeld. The spectators were placed all around the band with seats very close to them what delivered a 'private' atmosphere. The sound intensity was comfortable. I don't know if this gig has been an exception but it seemed to be a little bit emotionless on the other hand and the band gave only one short encore which was disappointing for me personally. Probably because of something like a burnout syndrom at the end of their Europe tour? Musically the songs were dominated by a strong fusion touch. Holdsworth's guitar sounded similiar to his solo album Metal Fatique what I know very well. Some exceptions are to point out, for example the two songs Fred and Red Alert which they performed in the typical Tony Williams Lifetime style. The three musicians were soloing a lot and so Wackerman and Johnson have been more than a 'simple' rhythm section. Starting from a main theme they often drifted apart from each other as nearly playing on their own but finally finding together once again later. The gig was a perfect demonstration of their abilities and musical relationship in fact and the audience was pleased even though the band only played for nearly 80 minutes. Unfortunately I came very late, was too far away from the band and it was difficult for me to take better photos but I was able to reach for Allan's signature on my Bundles inlet at least. setlist: - The Fifth - Fred - Madam Vindage - Above & Below - The things you see - Material Real - Devil take the Hindmost - Gaslamp Blues - Letters of Marque - Red Alert Edited by Rivertree - June 01 2008 at 16:58 |

I wish that Allan would play America more. I only got to see him once with Bill Bruford during his Gradually going tornado tour. He is a great player. I have always liked his work.

Sweet! Closest show to me is the Columbus show. Good to see him playing here though. |
