I must second the King Crimson suggestion. Larks' Tongues in Aspic is a good choice.

The whole Epiloq album, by Anglagard is very dark and disturbing!

VDGG - A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers,
Tool - Third Eye (THAT breathing type of noise can be terrifying) Pink Floyd - Atom Heart Mother & Echoes (the middle bit is pretty freaky when played in the dark) |

Zappa - The Return of the Son of the Monster Magnet
King Crimson - Industry
Fantômas - Delerium Cordia (Extreme example. Over 60 minutes of sound experimentation, all in ONE track!)

Two obvious bands.
The Goblin - who have for so long been writing progressive rock for Italian horror movie sound tracks - I know two fans who suggest it is essential to see any one of these movies and hear the Goblin sound track simultaneously to maximise the effect of the music.
And effectively the combined Mellotrons of Anekdoten/Landberk, as Morte Macabre with their only to date tribute to Italian horror movie soundtracks, Symphonic Holocaust
