First , determine your budget. Second, do you already have an amp ? If not, and especially if this is your first set, you may want to check out the packages. Fender, Peavey, Yamaha and other brand names have good deals for beginners.
What I can tell you, is that prices have come down a lot for good guitars. We are no longer in an age where a $200 guitar will sound like crap. It may not be up there with a Jimmy Page signature model Les Paul, but it shouldn't deter you from playing.
If you have a friend who knows a bit more than you, ask them to come with you to your local music shop. DOn't be shy about trying out several. And don't be ashamed to admit your current level of play. As with any retail  purchase, keep your happy price to yourself. Let the salesperson show you what they have to offer.
Once you have a few guitars that interest you, check out sites like Harmony Central or Ultimate Guitar for reviews. Keep in mind that many of these seem to be written by a company sales rep. At times, it's as if the cheapest guitar out there is the best ever made. But look for the failings or faults of your model/brand, and focus more on those posts that seem more balanced. DO remember that these sites are composed of opinions & not expert reviewed opinions. You're looking for differing ideas here, not the answer as to whether you should buy a particular make or model.
And lastly, check out pawn shops or second hand shops. If you know one that you trust the staff, this can be a great place to find a bargain.

All the brand names offer good quality at good prices. Careful with the lesser known names that aren't carried by the big stores. They may be good, but if a company has to sell their goods in retail outlets on consignment, then ask yourself why the store doesn't have the confidence to stock it.

Yeah I know. There's so many good brands out there that one is easily overwhelmed by the embarrassment of riches. And nowadays, Fender and Gibson can't claim the title of King of the hill with all the others such as Peavey, PRS, Ibanez, Yamaha, Gretsch, ESP, et al being able to claim to match the two big names in quality & price point from beginner to pro.
