[QUOTE=Yams]Old recordings might sound better in their original format, but anything from the late 80's on will sound better on CD. And as we move into the future, and bands from the pre-digital era become forgotten, vinyl will eventually follow suit. [/QUOTE

Well i don't listern any bollox from the 80's anyway so it all suits me very nicely thank you.& as i have a couple of copies of my most played albums on vinyl i don't care two sh*ts anyway, the beauty with vinyl & your restrictions of not being into prog after '80's is you'll never need any fresh inferior formatted music.I have thousands of albums & that keeps me happy. If there's any rare ones i may not have, the second hand vinyl market is vast enough,so wow to the future.

That is total bollox, everyone said that vinyl would be obsolete in 1983.You obviously don't know the statistics of the specialist audio market, which is enough to warrent vinyl cutting plants to re-open.

Suck on this baby:

I'm not bitching.CD was designed as a money spinning medium attracting the consumer with outragious claimes, guarenteed to win them over, selling the album titles all over again, they are extremely cheap & easy to manufacture, the pressing plants have virtually no returns in comparison to the old vinyl mis-pressings,you can copy CD with no loss of digital garbs etc...students dream of cheap music came true. But they are no means a serious sound medium. Most students have probably never seen a specialised record deck anyway.

No i did'nt make my mind up regarding CD from the outset.I bought the first specialised british CD player back then,my wife owns a relitivly new ARCAM 'CD92' CD player at present.I've analised various issues of the same albums to find that they actually sound worse now than they did @ the outset believe it or not.To come out with a coment regarding excess of £10K worth of gear.Specialised Hi-fi is my hobby & is how i run my buisness, the so called high end gear from the U.S which hold frighnening price tags is nothing but junk in tank like cases. As with CD the newer hi-fi equipment is no where as good as the older gear.

I've actually just replaced my gear with pretty old items.

I now use a Logic 'DM101' turntable modified with a new outboard power supply,Silver wired 'Syrinx 'PU3' arm & Supex '900' moving coil cartridge.

Pre-Amp is a Rose 'RV-23S' valve pre.

Power amps are 4 x Quad '405-2' modified to run in mono-block configuration,bi-amplifing a pair of ARC '202' loudspeakers...(Thats one power amp driving each individule drive unit, ridding unit interaction at the cross-over)

Karn, do you have the version I'm talking about?  It's not a remaster at all, they found the original master tapes, and have done a clean transfer without touching a single EQ setting.  It sounds better than any remaster attempt I've heard.  <3

Oh yes as technology advanced the japs decide to bring out High Density Compact Disc.Super,or not.Not is the word.I have 4 issues of this album on Vinyl. As i compare the 1st pressing on 'Island' records to an American ''Mobile Fidelity' digitally remastered vinyl pressing to the 'HDCD' copy... to the latter,1st press wins hands down.Sorry old chap.

But thats progress for you.

If it's on CD forget it.
