I listen to mostly Symhonic, Art(mainly "eclectic " and "heavy"), Prog and Tech/Extreme metal.
I would like to hear more RIO, Zeuhl, Prog Folk, Italian Prog.

The Krautrock,Electronis and Post/Math Rock samples leave me generally quite cold.

Glad to hear you enjoyed Magma.  Since you like metal, I might suggest you start with groups like Taal, Kayo Dot, Mr. Bungle, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, and Estradaspere.  Wait, on second thought, get Hoyry Kone's Houno Parturi, Miriodor's Mekano and try John Zorn's naked City.  Maybe Taal first.  Then I suggest Present and Univers Zero, Boredoms so many.  Koenjihayakkei is a good modern Zeuhl band to try (Angherr Shisppa), and Eskaton and Dun are good old ones to try.  U Totem is one I love in Avant.  In Krautrock, Amon Duul II, Faust, Can.  I still don't know Krautrock well enough.

If you appreciate fusion then, there are a ton of avant bands to choose from.

Miriodor might be a good one to start with, and I think Mr. Bungle might be a great one to try (might check out the samples).  It's such a varied category.

That's just stuff off the top of my head.

I would also second Taal, Estradasphere, or SGM as great starting points. Mr. Bungle is good too, but it's tougher on the ears. Huono Parturi is amazing, but impossible to find unless you download.

That makes sense to me.  Anyway, even if acquiring Huono Parturi proves difficult (the lack of availability on CD being very sad because it is a great album -- masterpiece), I recommend that people listen the streaming mp3 at this site ("Karhunkaato") -- see HÖYRY-KONE -- which is, in my opinion, a superb track (though I might be more likely to suggest "Terva-Antti Ku" as a starter track for DT fans... hmm...).  Then on to Present, Univers Zero etc. etc.  But Taal is a band that is very popular here, and a good for both getting metalheads into other styles and others into metal.  Estradasphere is excellent.  And of course I should mention Alamailmaan Vasarat (which grew out of Hoyry-Kone).  And EDIT (just glanced at my post), I really should spell Alamaailman Vasarat right if I'm going to mention it at all. LOL

Best: Most Prog, I just like good musicality period

Worst:

Progressive Electronic
&
Tech Metal (ex. athiest and the like... because of the lack of feeling and speed seems to be the only thing it's got going for it. Yes, Opeth may be a rare exception but I still can't stand the death growls. I will say however that Damnation actually exceeded my expectations, even though I knew full well that my prog buddy Steven Wilson helped out in it.)
1 Chronicles 13:7-9

Then David and all Israel played music before God with all their might, with singing, on harps, on stringed instruments, on tambourines, on cymbals, and with trumpets.

Not that so-called Proggers need to or should like music from the all the Prog categories at this site, but, as a common trait of "Prog" is the blending of genres, there are, of course, bands/ albums that can really help one to cross over to, and appreciate, other categories here.

Perhaps for another thread, but I've always thought that it might be a useful exercise suggesting bands/ albums that may help one to better appreciate other categories (for instance, a Symph album that could also be tagged as Avant, or a Neo-Prog band that could also be tagged as folk etc.  Eclectic's got a wide variety of good examples, unsurprisingly).  Of course it helps to have a good knowledge of the bands that a person likes and dislikes, and a good understanding of the qualities someone admires in Prog.  Can open one's ears to whole new worlds.  I imagine that most of our tastes evolve over time as we become exposed to more (no matter what age we are).

Of course we'll all have least liked and most liked, and I'm sure that many, like with me, have found that their favourite categories/ genres/ subgenres tend to change depending on whatever one is particularly into at any given time (brains get rewired for different types).

Not to put you on the spot, but just out of curiosity, how many Zeuhl bands have you tried, and what is it about the albums/ streaming mp3s/ bands from the category that you don't like?

Hmm, I don't really have a favourite/least favourite subgenre, because there's enough music to like and dislike from all of them, but, statistically speaking, Zeuhl would be my least favourite subgenre as well, mainly because it is, to a large extent, about Magma.

Well, yeah, fair enough, Magma is the core band.  Magma IS Zeuhl.  I actually find a fair variety in Magma's albums.  Some people dislike MDK, for instance, but love Kohntarkosz, Udu Wudu and Kobaia.  Some people dislike Magma, but love Dun, Weidorje, or Eskaton etc.  Though i've liked Magma muchly since I first heard the band, I was once a bigger fan of non-Magma Zeuhl and Zeuhl-related bands.

It's the one category where I happen to be a completist (Canterbury to quite an extent too).

There is music I like from every category.  I'll also add a band from each that I love: Kind of  weird the way I ordered this.  The genres and bands I particularly like are avant, jazz, and/ or folk oriented; whereas the ones I like least are thrashy and, or slick, AOR,, and or Emo inspired.  Several in my bottom list have many favourite bands and albums, but I wanted to do nine in each list.

Favourites with some favourite bands:

RiO/ Avant (Vortex)
Zeuhl (Magma)
Canterbury (Picchio dal Pozzo)
Prog Folk (Comus)
Krautrock (Faust)
Jazz/ Rock Fusion (Area)
Eclectic (Gnidrolog)
Electronic (Philippe Besombes)
ISP (Banco del Mutuo Soccorso)

Lesser faves with favourite bands (from least fave category to very well liked):

Neo-Prog (Discipline)
Prog Metal (Indukti -- love lots of music with a  metal component -- e.g. Hoyry Kone, Taal, and Estradasphere)
Crossover (McDonald and Giles)
Post-Rock/ Math Rock (Godspeed You Black Emperor)
Heavy Prog (Gravy Train)
Psych/Space (Far East Family Band)
Indo/ Raga (Codona)
Symph (Arachnoid -- one of my all time faves, actually French symph ranks very highly for me especially when it's avantish.  Shylock da bomb too).

Definitely I'm more avant oriented, and generally appreciate a strong jazz component and/ or folk component.

EDIT: I sometimes describe my favourite progressive music as chamber music.  Be great if people would also say which elements appeal most, and appeal the least.
