I've got one single question:
- what's this instrument played by Emerson (Palmer?) in suite Karn Evil 9 between 14:30-15:50? I would like to know 'cause I've never heard such sound before/after :-/. Is it some modulated sound of Moog (in fact I've never supposed that Moog can emulate such percussion-like sound so I don't think that it is)? Your propositions?

I just saw your question, I won't have time to deal with it tonight but I will get back to you tomorrow or the next day. I have been collecting and playing old synths since way back and I can usually recreate sounds. I'm looking forward to checking out the old ELP cut.

By the way, I don't have the CD and I will be using the LP and a watch, or burning the LP to CD. Is that 14:30 into Karn Evil 9 or 14:30 into the record?
I haven't had a chance to listen to it yet, I have to go to work right now, but thinking back I know there is some very early synth percussion on there played by Palmer.

It might be Palmer's synthesized percussion that is listed in the BSS booklet. Im not completely sure though as I have wondered about this myself for quite some time.

I don't have a CD with me, but are you referring to a thingie that sounds like a steel drum?
I would really like to know that myself. It doesn't sound like a Moog, but the source (whatever it might be) sound like it's run thru ring modulator effect...

I'm quite familiar with the history of the equipment (synths, drum machines etc.) of 60s 70s & 80s but I don't have a clue. There is,though, something else: on Led Zeppelin's "Coda" album, on the drum solo track "Bonzo's Montreaux" there's somewhat similar effect, executed by Jimmy Page and credited simply as "Electronic treatment". Hmm... Any thoughts?

It's in Karn Evil 9 14:30 minute not in the whole record.

Yeah, the old steel drum sound on the Moog. That's definitley Keith and not Carl. My Juno will do that, but not as good as the Moog.
The distictive part of the sound comes from the oscillators not being tuned in unison, but to the interval you hear when you hit a single note on a steel drum. I think they are roughly a third apart, but I may be wrong on that.
Anyway, that's a great part, it was fun hearing it again.

It is easy to get percussion sounds on a synth, fast attack on the envelope with short release and you are there. Adding some noise and extra resonance helps too. Check out Subotnik's Silver Apples of the Moon, Touch or Until Spring for some serious synth percussion.

Hi Clarke, I just reread your comment on the ring modulation. The Moogs that Keith was using at this time could have had any custom feature he wanted (within reason). My guess is that the sound is using on board ring modulation (like a MS20) instead of running a synth through a ring modulator.
