Many years ago I bought a video entitled Live At The Rainbow 1974, I hope it will be released on DVD, what a mindblowing gig, it captures the great pre-Bohemian Rhapsody sound featuring great interplay and lots of tension between the fiery guitar and sparkling Grand piano, Art-rock at its best

How are they not progressive? Certainly their recording techniques and styles were innovative at the time.

Agreed - I defy anyone to hear A Night At The Opera (yes, including that song) or Queen II & deny Queen's prog-rock credentials. Up to, and to an extent including, Live Killers, they were one of the great pomp/prog rock bands in the UK. One thing hampered them though was the high production values of their studio recordings, which precluded them from playing certain songs effectively live, without the use of extensive backing tapes.

That's an amazing video, Erik. It features this fantastic piece that still sends shivers up my spine everytime I see it:
A great live upgrade on an allready great studio song!

Wow, so emotional to watch Kotro, on stage Freddy felt happy and appreciated, he loved his audience and what a band in those days

can definitely see Queen in Xover... but as Raff noted earlier... many more pressing things to deal with. Dean and I don't really discuss PR to Xover moves that much... more pressing things to deal with... like additions to the site.

Queen is one of my favorite bands ever. Freddy was just so talented. I think anything he was singing to was gold.
And sure they were progressive: My Fairy King, March of the Black Queen, Prophet's Song, etc.
I also love Queen for being able to draw so many influences from so many styles; Opera, Blues, Jazz, Rock

Probably my single favorite band of all time. No other band's first 6 albums can compare to Queen in my opinion. Queen - Keep Yourself Alive, Great King Rat, Liar....awesome stuff here. Very heavy and artsy. Queen II - their only true prog album. Masterful from start to finish. Sheer Heart Attack - Solid all the way through with a few gems.A Night at the Opera - best album of all time? Quite possibly. It stands next to Sgt. Pepper, Dark Side, and IV IMO. A Day at the Races - a toned down version of the previous album, cut from the same mold though. News of the World - just an awesome rock album. They became a singles band after that, but went out with a bang when Innuendo was released in 1991.

I agree, it's definitely up there. You just know from the moment 'Death on Two Legs' starts up, that the album is going to be an absolute killer. It's an album of humour, drama and brilliant musical contrasts.

Ah, the mighty Queen.
I think that a lot of their music would fit well into the "art rock" label, more than a "prog rock" label. However, I don't think anyone can deny the sheer *intelligence* of Queen. Everything they did, every note that they played, was thought out ahead of time. They took chances, and broke some rules in the process. The first concert I ever saw was Queen in 1982, and for a long time, they were my favorite band. Although I don't listen to them as much nowadays, my respect for them has not dwindled. I think that there are valid arguments about whether Queen would be a prog band or not, however, I don't think it matters much in the scheme of things. I also don't agree with the analogy of "without Yes, there wouldn't have been Queen". That's a little too simple to be true. The fact is, Queen dipped into so many more musical styles than Yes. That isn't meant to discredit Yes, because they are one of my favorite bands too. I just don't think you can compare the two bands and make a point out of it.
I agree with most of this thread about Queen II being their best record. Right behind that is Sheer Heart Attack.

Can you back that statement up with any real thoughts?
Didn't think so.

Ah Cert - it's the old internet forum version of 'knock down ginger'; run into a forum, make an unsubstantiated statement designed to annoy, then run away. Things were far more vociferous than this during the great Queen War of 2005

^Yes, back then we had people that had the intelligence to reason and debate in great depth - spoiled only slightly by the tendency to completely drop all of that intelligence in arguments over which is best or worst - or, gulp, not prog. I always found the latter argument mystifying - since no-one can adequately define exactly what Prog is, how can anyone possibly state what is NOT prog?
Personally, I would never play this silly "knock-down Ginger" game of which you speak - everyone knows that ELP are crap...

Queen is a very good rock band. Queen, Queen II and A Night At The Opera have some good complex songs. Sheer Heart Attack, A Day At The Races and News Of The World are very good too.

Jazz too. And the had some brilliant (and prog!) moments in 80's as well: Innuendo, Chinese Torture, Machines (or Back To Humans), Was It All Worth It... Flash Gordon also have a few moments worth investigating!

When it comes to Queen and their style, I guess it has Prog influences that are undeniable, but in the other hand I think that their slight turn on "Pop kinda music ,fills me with some questions...The same happens with bands like Dire Straits and The Beatles. Its too hybrid, so it becomes intresting, but we could possibly label Queen as Progressive Rock, at some albums, like "A Night At The Opera" baybe.

Queen II is obviously the most overall prog record...but Innuendo has some moments that are simply hair raising as well!!!
