Topic: Various Kashmir Ripoffs Posted: August 06 2007 at 03:44 |
Yeah, I know there's a poll very similar to this one, but this one is totally different! Observe, if I had to place all these numbers side by side, here's what I'd do:
"Gates of Bablyon" - really quite a forgotten chunk o' diamond this one.
"No Quarter" - Took some time to grow on me, but it did.
"Stargazer"/"Kashmir" - Too close to call. Probably. Then again, "Gazer's" got Ritchie...
"Achilles Last Stand" - Good, but no Kashmir.
And I've never heard "Eyes of Fire," I just understand it's his last, great "Kashmir" rip off; perhaps you can enlighten me.

I voted for No Quarter - but not because of the studio version, but because of those mindblowing, over 20 minutes long, live versions. More precisely, the 1975 Earl's Court version is one of the greatest pieces of music ever, maybe my favourite rock performance. I like Achilles Last Stand more than Kashmir (which I love too) - the live version on my Myspace homepage is the reason why.

Ok, let me just admit that I simply love Led Zeppelin. That's why I voted for one of their's and I decided that it has to be Kashmir (it was almost a draw with No Quarter, though)! And I second Andu in saying that it's the brilliance of the live performances which gets them the points. Kashmir as played in the No Quarter: Unledded performance is a 5-star gem that everybody should listen to at least once. And even the rip-off in Puff Daddy' s Come With Me (I wonder why Jimmy Page agreed to that) could not kill the song. And yes, you missed one: Where the heck is In The Light?

Kashmir is only good listening when you're getting lucky with that chick that works in the mall, Other than that Kashmir blows chunks and Achille's Last Stand is clearly the better song. And like Andu said about No Quarter, The live version is mind blowing.

You mean side two of Led Zeppelin IV? You need to play that instead of Kashmir, like in Fast Times at Ridgemont High.

Not the best song here, but I voted for Gates of Babylon because it's great and deserves at least one vote.

"Stargazer", of course - though I don't agree at all with the premise of this poll (sorry, Whistler - you're one of my favourite characters here! ). I don't think any of these songs are "Kashmir" ripoffs - and then, "No Quarter" (whose live versions are indeed mindblowing! ) came out BEFORE "Kashmir".

Maybe they're all Immigrant Song rip-offs?

Right, we'll have to move it to "proto-Kashmir." But it's already on the poll now, no complaining!
