I just spied a thread on page two about amplifiers but started a new one because it's for a keyboard :)

Similarly, I'm on a budget (which is negotiable, but I'd like to keep it low). I just got a new keyboard and right now it's plugged into my hifi but I want a small amp for band practise (it's just messing-about-in-bedroom practise though). I think the guitarist uses a 15w amp. Any recommendations on brands and such? The ad papers seem to have quite a lot in them but I don't want to pay more than I have to on something that's louder than I need it to be.

Cheers :)

The hifi isn't a bad choice; most stereos have a better frequency range for keyboards than a guitar amp will give you. I know a lot of keyboardists use a cabinet amp but you'll end up paying more money (especially for one with a decent stereo image) than you really need. Most of the keyboardists I've known have gone straight into the PA (through a mixer, or course).

If you're competing with a 15w guitar amp, a good choice might be a decent pair of powered speakers or even a small 2.1 setup for extra bass response. Check out some PC speaker packages- some of them are pretty good (JBL, Yamaha, etc.), and cheaper than comparable equipment that's being marketed for musicians.

I've found a 'best of' list here:

http://www.musicplayer.com/lounge/guides/combo1.htm

You get a short review, a piccy and a small 'how to buy' section.

Hope this is of use.
