THE LONGEST TRACKS IN ex-YUGOSLAVIAN PROG ROCK SCENE

One of the key elements of the structure of progressive rock, according to almost all definitions of that music genre, is the existence of long tracks, songs or compositions, that cross the customary time limit of 3-4 minutes of a pop/rock song.

I will here present a chronological list of the longest tracks from the former Yugoslavian (progressive) rock scene, from the year 1969 through 1990.

I decided to choose the tracks exceeding the duration of 10 minutes. Although one may argue that even many tracks with duration of 5-10 minutes are long enough and even more typical for progressive rock, I opted for the 10-minutes limitation for the sake of ease of research and concentration on the fewer number of really drawn-out tracks.

In some early cases, notably INDEXI and KORNI GRUPA, the tracks were recorded but released only many years later; in this case I mentioned the year of original recording. As a rule, I did not count live versions of previously existing studio tracks, unless the live tracks were actually the original, first recordings of the compositions.

The list presents in the following order:
  • the name of the band or the artist
  • the title of the track
  • duration of the track
  • the year of recording (if different from the year of release)
  • the album title and year of first release (in brackets)
  1. INDEXI – “Negdje na kraju u zatisju” - 11:42 – rec. 1969 (“Indeksi”, 1972)

I am also working on a more extended essay under the working title “Prog Under Tito: Introduction To Yugoslavian Classic Progressive Rock”, which I intend to post here when finished. Geek

Bravo, Sejo!!!Clap

I just stumbled upon this today...and...

Surely this is pioneering work in prog-rock essays, journalism and analysis from/for  the ex-Yu region!

Unfortunately I got a feeling that this blog of yours will, in a way, "hang in the air" at the moment. That is by no means a negative criticism neither to you, neither to ProgArchives. Simply put, there are so many things to be done!!!

I was amused by reading the list, and surprised that you squeezed so many titles! It's a commonplace for Yu-prog to utilise shorter heavy/psych/jazz/folk prog forms rather than longish, symphonic ones. It's significant how a household name for Yu-prog, Leb i Sol is not present here.

You did your list very carefully, I see - - even "Vspominam se antimeterije" is here!

I see a few names that are not on ProgArchives (yet!?) such are Grupa 220 and Anastasia.

In that case, the only long song that I could think off to be added to your list is IDOLI's "Amerika",  clocking at more than 10 mins; but I'm not sure if their type of art-rock is suitable for ProgArchives.

Keep up the good work!

Thanks Clarke for useful answer! :)
I think "Amerika" is only about 8 min long, otherwise I would have included it here. But I'll check again.
Of course, not all bands that produced long tracks are necessarily prog rock bands by the fact alone.  For Grupa 220 from what I heard I would not call them really "progressive"... pioneering important classic rock band - yes!
You noticed right that Yugo bands avoided to record long tracks in general. Even more, most of the albums in this period were rather short, rarely exceeding 35 min.
Laziness, lack of inspiration, unprofessionalism, blackmailing from record companies... who knows Question

Oh, is it? Well, not band for a band with pop tendencies that was recording in the middle 80s...
However, it certainly sounds like it's long for 15 minutes or moreLOL

How many chords are in that song? One?

I'm not bashing Idoli, actually I like them a lot. I just think that kind of minimalistic, repetitive experimentation was a little bit too much...

Ermm Yeah it is very minimalist and rhythmic, one chord with odd time stamp. Basically I see there Krautrock influences (Can...) Of course they are known for their pop/new wave sound.
Idoli were great, a true campy/artsy masterpice...Cool
