So, we know about these two lonely persons, created by the genius of The Beatles.
Eleanor Rigby works in the church and is ignored by everyone. No one showed up for her funeral, except for Father Mckenzie.
Father works hard all through the night, to write the words for a sermon that noone will hear.
They both make want to cryCry, buy I feel more sorrow for Father Mckenzie. He is an idealist, like me, and his beliefs encourage him to work in spite of being alone in the world.
Who do you think has the saddest story?
(Note: This belongs to the proto-prog lounge, but I couldn't create a poll there)

They don't make me sad, they're just cowardly losers

Come On! Haven't you ever felt lonely in some point of your life?
Even though circumstances aren't the same (you aren't a priest I suppose), the loneliness is the same, so sympathy works here.
Anyways, excuse my obsession for these two characters. I've just discoverd the song so I'm obsessed with it and I've felt lonely these past few weeks.

I feel more for Eleanor. The idea of no one being at your funeral is horrible..

One of the Beatles best songs, IMO. Very moving.

Eleanor and "all the lonely people".

But those who watched "Yellow Submarine" remember (I hope) animations when "Eleanor Rigby" sounds - too many lonely people everywhere.

Another priest or vicar will have to bury him, so Mackenzy wont be alone..

I think I get the feel that Eleanor didn't know how to exist outside her routined existence working in the church, and so never formed any relationships. Makenzy, on the other hand must have chosen to be a minister.

There is not really even a suggestion of friendship between her and Makenzy. The line "Father Makenzy, wiping the dirt from his hands as he walks from the grave" Almost sounds dismissive, certainly emotionally detatched from the grief one would feel after burying someone they knew well.
