It's not really that much of a problem is it?

We have spoken to the owners, it is they who were keenest that albums be added and available for review as soon as the details are officially announced.

Exactly! And please, other prog-sites wait at least to a week before the release to review the album. Of course here it's not the same: we don't have people that HAVE to review an album nor I think we have labels sending us copies in advance to review....But it doesn't hurt to emulate good things... We are the the best prog-site on the web, FOR SURE. But we could be even better if we stopped any activities that might hurt the Archives' credibility....

Now I know the owners are the ones that make the decisions, but what about speaking with them about this? I've noticed a growing consensus against pre-release reviews (specially when that PRE part is like 3 months in advance!!!!)

I for one quite like the idea that only collaborator's can review those new releases. Perhaps solely on the basis of that we already know that those collabs (most of the time) write decent reviews when it comes to what they actually write (the contents)

^^^

I see your point.  If people want to get them when they come about, advance reviews help.  Still, it might be good to require that they say how they got it so that we come closer to KNOWing that it's legal... just because it would look better for the site.

Collaborators do not necessarily receive advance copies of albums.

When I say "good for the site", I simply mean that our memebrs are interested in hearing about new albums and what people think of them, as soon as they can.

There are some high profile new releases coming up though, and we will be watching carefully to ensure that standards are maintained.

this is a fantastic idea...as I said it before, having un-released reviews hurts the site...I understand what you say: early reviews may draw more new people towards the archives.... but those same new people may be dissapointed to find out the poor quality of about 80% of un-released reviews... I insist on the idea that, unless it's by a collaborator, un-released albums shouldn't be reviewed until after the release date. If that's not what you meant with "early reviews are good for the site", what may be?

But then again, what can I say.  All the albums I listen to are my brother's, and he's still trying to catch up on the 70s, let alone modern releases...

Some reviewers get legitimate advanced copies before the release date. We would not wish to prevent them from submitting reviews.

Couldn't they wait?  Wouldn't hurt them.

Perhaps you could let those people contact administrators or something and that via communciation with PM they could send the review and the album could momentarily be unlocked.. the review gets posted by one of the site's admins and the album gets locked again Smile

Here's an idea which comes to mind, but don't ask me how to do it, because i'm not a techy, or geek for that matters

Anyway, maybe the unreleased albums could be'locked', so it would prevent people from reviewing it. After the albums released, they can be'unlocked'...

any thougts on this ?
