Austria is not well known as a pole of Prog.
Allthough we have some very active and respected bands like Dead Soul Tribe and Eventide, we even have the Problem, that most of the international Prog-Acts don't even get a promotion for live gigs and so prog-gigs became very few.
On this point I and my band jumped in and began to make some own deals with international Bands to get them to Austria. It all begann at a concert of Arena in Polen, where we had some drinks with the band and they told us, that they would like to play in Vienna, but didn't get the right deal. We spontanously said: Let us try and one year later, at the the Pepper-Ghost Tour we had them in Vienna, with us opening for them.
After that we sent mail to all famous European Acts and soon we could host names like: The Flower Kings, Riverside, Liquid Scarlet and lately Pain of Salvation, Spock's Beard and Sieges Even. We support these bands and alos play the promoters-role.
I tell you this for 3 reasons:
1st: it may be a role modell for other bands, that are eager to play gigs with their heroes
2nd: I guess we have some Prog-Bands active at Progarchives, to whom it may concern, that their is a good alternative to the regular deals in Vienna
3rd I want to intruduce our music to this forum. Take a listen @ www.myspace.com/conxious
or at
There you also can find fotos and interviews we made with the bands we hosted!
Cheers

Austria is major in my mind for several important jazz fusion artists, not least Joe Zawinul (Weather Report & World Circuit), Alex Machacek (his Featuring Ourselves album of 98 or 99 was major, teamed up with Terry Bozzio for several album e.g. Delete & Roll , plus live projects), Conrad Schrenk's Extravaganza's Save The Robots is listed by quite a few to be the best jazz rock album of the 90's, etc.

That's weird, Machacek and Schrenk were two I was planning on mentioning. And Zawinul I also would suggest, though I didn't know of his origins previously.
Austria has plenty to brag about, it just takes some looking.

And I heard some rumours that Kristoffer Glidenlow is doing some work together with the dead sould tribe bunch here in Austria.
Do some of you know Milan Polak - he is also an awsome guitar-talent! He now lives in Germany I think, as many of the Austrian musicians go to Germany or to NY.

I'm trying hard to remember the name of another Austrian jazz rock group, whose guitarist made a separate recording in the USA with members of Tribal Tech and was the last recording by Bob Berg????
