I think he's a very talented guitarist and I love his tone. I don't know if he's been an influence on other guitarists though so i can't vote for that option. I voted for option 3.

I think Mick Ronson is responsible for a lot of Brian May's sound and style.

He's just one more good guitarist, and earned an historical importance for being the Queen's guitarist. Although I think he hasn't influenced in any relatively succesful guitar player. My vote: he is a good guitarist. No more  Tongue

I go for option 2: "He is very good and a great influence on a lot of players."

Just like Freddie's vocals, Brian's guitar playing was a very important trademark of Queen. Brian May has a unique style and I especially like his live guitar solos where he is putting up a triple delay guitar battle against himself (like the track Brighton Rock on the Live Killers album). Sheer guitar extravaganza!

actually, he's influenced many metal guitar players...

Do you think so, Draconean? Really? It could be true, but if it's so, it's rather sad that a rock/mainstream guitarist were recognized in this era by "virtuosos" metal guitar players and not by his contemporaries musicians.

By the way, what kind of guitarist are succesful to you?

Haven't listened to a lot of Queen, but I admit his style is instantly recognisable.
There was an advert here in England a couple of years back, and there was a solo playing in the background, it was easy to tell it was Brian May LOL

Anyway, I voted good playerSmile

Read Simon Singh's most excellent and readable Big Bang - also seen him lecture it. Singh's use of audio-visual aids was excellent, even brought the question why people wrongly think they hear lyrics about  'the devil in his shed' when Stairway to Heaven  is played backwards

Thanks - I'm fascinated by different theories in this area - I'm just coming to the end of "The Goldilocks Enigma", by Paul Davies, which is a superb read - quantuum mechanics for the clueless (most music courses don't consider particle physics in any great depth - a mistake, in my opinion).
The important thing is not to stop questioning.
