Topic: Some tips for a newbie? Posted: February 01 2005 at 12:26 |
I'm guessing someone here will place a curse on me after this pathetic post, but here goes...
I've been looking through the list of bands in the archives, and there are alot of unknowns for me. And I'm sure there are alot of bands/albums there I would like, if I only knew about them. I'm looking for something similar to any of these bands/albums: Savatage (post/incl. Streets), Shadow Gallery, Dream Theater - Images and Words, Ayreon, Everon, Eternity X - The Edge, Nikolo Kotzev - Nostradamous, Kamelot (post. Fourth Legacy), Gary Hughes - Once and Future King (I,II)... I think you get the picture.
I'm looking for something post 1980, that isn't too heavy.

Welcome in tha 'hood Theli
Not to heavy post 1980. Definetly Rush, 2112, hemispheres and Farewell to Kings
Try some Marillion Fugazi, Script for a jesters tear, Arena Pride, The Visitor, IQ Dark Matter, Ever, Pendragon Window of life, The Masquerade Overture, Genesis(pre 1980 though) Peter Gabriel era.
It's all neo-progressive rock style. Downloads are available from this site, so easaly obtainable

edit: sorry, it won't sound like what you want, but this was my first prog rock album (well, at least when i knew i was buying prog rock), you might like some jethro tull as well, pick up Aqualung and go from there

Anything by Pain Of Salvation, especially 'Remedy Lane'. And after that Riverside - 'Out Of Myself'. And after that...ask again.

I think that if you like "Images and Words", then you'll love Yes.

Indeed try Yes (pre 1980, or live albums)
pre 1980, my advise would be The Yes Album, Close to the edge or Relayer
Live, I liked; Live In The House Of Blues, and ABWH's An evening of Yes music. DVD magnification tour is very good aswel.

You'd probably adore Opeth. Their all albums are fantastic,
"Morningrise" being one of my all-time favourite records. That's also the
least accessible one, so "Blackwater Park" or "Still Life" is the place to
begin.

even though they don't sound like any of the bands mentioned, you can't go wrong with Jethro Tull, especially Thick As A Brick, Songs from the Wood, and Aqualung
