the best negative character i've seen in the last years is phoenix's commodus in "gladiator"...
i'll think for some more that are not on the list, too.

Other. John Goodman. He was impecable on "Barton Fink". It was his chance to show the full extent of his talent, and damn he took it. Impresive.

Other, Jack Nicholson, for an horror movie, like "The Shining", one of the best movies and actings I've ever seen. A superb actor!

Good call. Barton Fink is sadly under appreciated. It may be my favorite by the Coen Brothers. That or Big Lebowski.... close call.

Goodman was also a great bad-guy in 'Oh brother, where art thou' (Coen brothers, again) as the one eyed, KKK member cyclops bible salesman...

That movie is a travesty.Kubrick totally destroyed a great book,and I think it is a terrible adaptation.The thing that bothers me the most other than Kubrick ignoring alot of major things from the book,was how Nicholson portrayed Jack Torrance.
Torrance,despite being raised by a bullying,abusive father,having his own problems with alcohol,and his career being in the toilet,didn't start off crazy.The hotel slowly drove him insane.But imo,Nicholson seemed crazy from the start of the movie.
Kubrick ignored the terribly creepy topiary animals,totally ignored the WHOLE SITUATION about the Overlook's faulty boiler,and killed off Dick Halloran.All that junk with Danny talking with his finger was just...dumb.Torrance didn't stalk his family with an axe but with a roque mallet,and never uttered the phrase "Here's Johnny" in the book.

The beauty of the film is that its a CLASSIC! Taking it to greater heights than the book could ever manage. When you make a film, yopu don't have to slavishly copy the source.

No,you don't have to exactly copy it.But you don't have to ignore major scenes and plot points in the book.
And any adaptation of the movie would never be as all out creepy as the book.
