Topic: Good guys or The Dark Side in movies... Posted: December 18 2006 at 19:33 |
Useless, but again, what poll isn't?
I always side with the Dracula type of Dark foes: Sauron, Darth Vader, Skeletor, Dr. Hell, Cobra, Baron Ashler, but mostly with the Prince of Darkness. I don't like the regular crooks a lot, and heroes... they're just too annoying and idolized for me. I hate any idolized thing....

I'm not a fan of the traditional Hollywood movie with the good guys coming out on top. I enjoy semi-realistic movies better. Its best when there is no clear view of who is good and who is bad, because thats the way things really are. No one is really good and who the f*ck am I to say who's good and bad.
I watched Fargo recently, thats a good example of what I'm talking about, no one is "good" they're all kinda bad some just seem worse, at least on the surface.

Conflict doesn't always have to arise out of a battle of good versus evil. That's nothing but a cheap tool for people who want to market a story. Any good story teller can find other ways to build conflict instead of relying on clear black and white stereotypes.

Man, if there's something that seems odd to me, is when poeple have to over-analyze everything and treat everything like life-or-death matter... IT's A STUPID QUESTION, NOT AN ANALYSIS ABOUT MOVIES AND HOLLYWOOD. Believe me, i'm probably a bigger cinemaphile than you, I have watched hundreds of movies, my father is an artist/cinematographer, so It's not that I LOVE John Woo films.... I also like deeper characters and in reality, none is 100% bad or 100% wrong, but THIS IS A POLL FOR FUN. Geez!

Love you anyway. If you love prog, that is.

The good guys.
People who try to improve our world. People who might well be flawed, but deserve respect, because they strive to act with honour, keep their word, and defend the weak or innocent.
That's why I like Victorian novels, "costume dramas" and movies like Master and Commander. Issues of honour, of what it means to be a respectable person, tend to be central to them.
Truly siding with evil (beyond laughingly cheering them on in silly movies) would mean that someone was a very nasty person whom I really wouldn't care to know.
Always the light, always hope. This ideal is reflected in my musical tastes as well.

It really depends. As long as the good/bad characters are well-developed and not cliche, I'm happy.

If you wanted a silly thread why did you ask a good question. I for one enjoy films very much, I watch all sorts of movies: romance, action, drama, comedy, cartoon, independent etc etc etc.
I enjoy films much like I do music (but not to the same extent) so I like to analyze and figure out what my preferences are in specific examples. I always love a good conversation about films (intelligent or silly) and you asked a mildly entertaining question which can be answered quite seriously.
I should have known with your personal posting history that this was only silly, but I thought you might be coming around I guess. The original post does not seem entirely silly.
I hope this isn't closed as you requested because it can still make a good discussion.

No I'm not. I'm filled with anger. I hate you. I dispise you. Argggg!!!!
No, of course you're right. It could be a good discussion. So let's not kill it.
But what's that about my posting history? I post some bombs every now and then, but also the good stuff...
I just put those one-side options because, really, we all know none is 100% good or 100% evil, so all of these characters i took mostly from sci-fi and action-adventure flicks where character development is not that great nor that necessary. But we all love our MAns With No Names as Lione gave us....

Great comeback, VV!
I have to admit I love the good guys most of the time; if they're 'holier than thou' or too goody-goody, they may just lose my support.
What I do like, though is when the boundaries are a little blurred, as for example in the 'Saw' movies (I know some will consider these pulp horror, but hey...) - the main protagonist, Saw (for it is he) can be seen as the bad guy, as he sets up all the traps & causes highly unpleasant things to happen to his victims; however - take a good look at the victims... not exactly pillars of society, are they? Also, all are given a choice, usually based on morality and 9 times out of ten, if they follow instructions exactly, they'll survive.
Sorry - wandered off thread, there ; one problem I do have is that although I support the good guys, why do the bad guys always look cooler!?!

i'm with the plot... i don't care if it has a happy ending or evil prevails as long as the film is good..
i hate it when they sacrifice a lot of the quality of the plot just to give the movie a happy ending and vice versa...

I tend to really like dark characters, villians, etc.
But as was stated in a previous post,I love characters where the lines are blurred, where you have trouble figuring out if the character is good or bad.
