Tony provides the substance,
Phil & Mike make it breathe,
Peter adds temper,
and Steve colours it all tastefully.

I love the outcome!
My favorite G-man is Tony because the roles of the other members are somewhat substitutable whereas no one else comes up with that kind of substance. At the same time he's so humble. 'I rather trust a man who doesn't shout what he's found.'

No Tony, no Genesis.

There could be only 1 answer: Banks!

Leader, main composer, melodic master, core of the band. Genesis without him couldn't exist. The rest is equal. Great musicians, each one creating Genesis' brilliance.

I'm not willing to vote here, sorry, they're ALL GREAT and they were best together... most of the time at least.

We have got to help our friend Valarius. IMO, Peter Gabriel fronted Genesis is what prog is all about.

It is hard to pick a favorite, but I lean toward Gabriel. His solo career is practically flawless. Hackett may have hit a couple of low points, but his quality stuff more than makes up for it. The bottom line is, it was the combination of Banks, Collins, Gabriel, Hackett, and Rutherford that was magic.

a true case where the sum is greater than the parts...but my favorite would have to be Hackett.

Peter Gabriel.  The best frontman!  So enthusiastic and emotional.

I believe I will vote for Mr. Hackett... quickly becoming my favourite guitarist, and I'm sure I'd like him even more if that damn Amazon order ever arrives!! AAAHG! Curse you back ordered discs!!

I feel really bad about not voting for poor Mike... hes not great... and hes not bad... but he has a double neck guitar... thats pretty cool... Oh, poor, POOR mike rutherford. Cry

Also, I dont believe Tony Banks IS Genesis, like more and more people seem to be thinking. Sure, he did a lot for the band... but Tony Banks IS Genesis... then how come it went so sour? Part of the reason I feel so bad for Mike R. is that hes the only member of the band that wasnt really required to MAKE Genesis IMO. Though poor Mikey could have been replaced, Hackett was obviously essential in some way since it pretty much started going downhill when he left... Gabriel's influence is obvious, Tony did provide a lot of great keys and solos as well as his occasional 12 string playing... even Phil Collins was mildly essential in that he provided the backing vocals with a voice very similar to Peter's... great drumming also but the backing vocals are what was really essential there especially since (and I hope Im not the only one calling him on this) Peter was sometimes inconsistent in his live performances, pulling the mic away, out of breath etc. I especially noticed this in a PG solo video I watched on youtube of him performing TLLDOB (just the title track not the album haha)... he was so energetic, running around everywhere, but he was always out of breath and constantly pulled the mic away from his mouth making for a bit of an annoying performance... I havent seen him do this nearly as much when he was with Genesis but even when he did Phil was backing him on certain parts which helped make it a bit less... distracting...

Anyway!

Hackett is my favourite, but Peter is probably just as awesome. I wouldnt do away with any of them. I wouldnt even replace ol' Mike Rutherford... I dont care who they'd want to replace him with... Levin.. Squire... it doesnt matter... I'd stick with Mike...

Ahh... what a great band.
