Ivan,
Nice point. Ammazon should be fairly representative of music purchases in general, if not 100% accurate. How did you arrive at the 1.25% figure? Did you include all the greatest hits releases like the platinum collection (currently #930 on Amazon) in your figures? also, what releases did you consider as the classics? Up through the Lamb or through Wind & Wuthering, Seconds Out, etc.. Plus Amazon frequently has multiple listings for the same title. Did you add all of them into your survey for all titles?
Looking at the positions of some of those LPs it could make a big difference in the numbers.

Hi again Trademark, will try to answer all your questions:
Trademark wrote:

Yes, in statistics the larger is the universe of persons or items involved, the smaller the percentage samples has to be, for example in a 100 persons universe, the percentage required of samples for a margin of +/- 1 of error will be 30%, in a hundreds of millions case as the total sales of albums, the sample acceptable would probably be smaller than 0.01% and Amazon exceeds it by large.
How did you arrive at the 1.25% figure?
According to most sources I checked the moment I presented this list the total online sales is 5% of the total world market and Amazon alone represents 25% of the world online sales, this gives at least 1.25%, probably I the case of music is larger because one of the products with a higher percentage of online sales is music.
Did you include all the greatest hits releases like the platinum collection (currently #930 on Amazon) in your figures?
No, because this kind of compilations are subject to fast and inaccurate variations due to external factors like in this case the proximity of a world tour, mainly because most Genesis fans in the world have all the official albums they care about and they want to get something new, being that platinum Collection is a recent item, not all Genesis fans have it.
There's also another important fact, Platinuum Collection has material from five eras (Pre Hackett and Collins, Gabriel and Hackett, 4 men, 3 men and even Ray Wison), which BTW has rised a lot in the last hours, now is N° 799.
also, what releases did you consider as the classics? Up through the Lamb or through Wind & Wuthering, Seconds Out, etc..
I considered official releases this means all the studio and live albums up to Seconds Out, leaving even ATTW3 and Duke outside, despite this fact, this albums are not among the highest ranked.
- Seconds Out has N° 1,093 in Amazon.com sales Rank
- ATOTT has N° 1,945 in Amazon.com sales Rank
- TLLDOB has N° 1,967 in Amazon.com sales rank
- Foxtrot has N° 2,382 in Amazon.comsales Rank
- Nursery Cryme has N° 2,628 in Amazon.com sales Rank (Oe of the worst sold Genesis albums)
- Trespass has N° 2,790 in Amazon.com sales Rank (The most underrated and probably the worst sold album after From Genesisto the Revelation
- Genesis, has N° 2,899 in the Amazon sales Rank.
- SEBTP has N° 3,386 in the Amazon sales Rank sales Rank
- Invisible Touch, the top selling Genesis album has N° 8,422 in the Amazon sales Rank
- ATTW3 has N° 9,556 in Amazon.com sales Rank
- Duke has N° 20,044 in Amazon.com sales Rank
- We Can't Dance has N° 48,195 in Amazon.com sales Rank
- Calling All Stations has N° 55,078 very close to We Can't Dance.

Plus Amazon frequently has multiple listings for the same title. Did you add all of them into your survey for all titles?
In this case the albums with more different editions are the older ones, and the differences betwen the oldest release and the later ones is huge, but in any case it would affect more the oldest (Classic) albums, in every case I tried to choose the best position.
Imvissible Touch has two releases in Amazon, one is N° 355,445 and the other is N° 5,356 today, it's clear that due to the concert has rised almost 3,000 places since October 20 when I published the first list, while Genesis (Shapes) has gone down 661 places, strange movements, seems that people is more interested in compílations and the poppiest albums.
On the other hand Nursery Cryme has 6 re-issues and has gone down in the last days, but this is due to the tour and after the new POP Genesis euphoria passes this will return to the normal numbers because the info has changed radically in the past days.
Looking at the positions of some of those LPs it could make a big difference in the numbers.
Yes it does.

This works for me. Also, I just went back and checked the earlier post and found I misunderstood part of what you said. My original thought was that you were saying that Genesis had 1.25% of the total record sales worldwide and it seemed pretty unlikely to me that this was the case.
I see now that what you meant was their positions (rankings) would not have been likely to change because Amazon has 1.25% of total worldwide sales (plus or minus a bit). My mistake.

Thanks for the sales rankings Ivan. How about Abacab? Not that I like the later stuff...Not that there's anything wrong with that.

There has been a lot of sh*t at Twickenham in recent months, just look how badly England's rubgy team has performed. Genesis will just add to the stadium's woes.

And Jonathan King says:
"The reason I've named this package Peter
Gabriel and Genesis is because it was always Peter's voice that caught
my ear and made me sign them, produce them and name them.
Peter has now been a solo artiste for so long that many Genesis fans think Phil was the lead singer.
This clarifies that and does not pretend to be a more recent recording."
The only thing that really bothers me about Collins'd Genesis is that when I tell people that I like Genesis, many of them imagine me disco-dancing to "You Can't Hurry Love" with "But, Seriously" posters of Phil broodingly glaring down from my walls.
If God- I mean, Gabriel, was still with Genesis making prog these days, there is the strong chance that it simply would have got tired. If anything Collins just illustrates how good Genesis were before?
The time to drive off Beachy Head is when Gabriel and Hackett announce they will be scoring the next Disney offering.

When I tell people I like Genesis, their noses wrinkle, they scowl and then the Phil Collins impressions begin. When I try to explain about the 'real' Genesis, they just dont hear me. Their laughter drowns me out!

Phil Collins once said that their progressive tag of the 70's really drags for them (he said that in the early 90's)
Take that, Phil Collins!!!!... now THE TRIO DRAGS FOR US!!! really, I'm ashamed to say that I like Genesis because of the unfortunate MISUNDERSTANDING with the Phil Collins solo project also called Genesis (pun intended ![LOL](https://www.progarchives.com/forum/smileys/smiley36.gif) )

I think people who are expecting Genesis to go back to prog are in for a big let down. Three words for those people: GET OVER IT. They have been a pop band(with some prog elements here or there; read: throwing us a bone)for the past 20 years at least and aren't going to give that up now. Just accept that Genesis are not prog and haven't been for a very long time and move on! For crying out loud there are tons of obscure symph prog bands out there crying to be heard while a few of you are still going on about wanting or expecting Genesis to return to prog. Get real. And to be honest their pop stuff really isn't that bad on it's own terms. It's only bad when you compare it to their earlier prog stuff. Solution: don't compare it! Trust me, I've been there myself and it took me a long time to learn the hard way as well. Count me in as someone who will try to get tickets when they come to the States. |

I still think that Gabriel and Hackett should get together and tour.
Has anyone tried "Genesis Revisited" by Steve Hackett and friends? It's interesting stuff.

I can't wait for this tour to hit the states... I love all of their albums, so I really don't care what they play.
