So I could, if I wanted to, buy a DJ turntable and fit a hi-fi cartridge to get better sound?

I guess it would be possible, but I don't really see the point...

DJ turntables have heavier tone arms and usually track heavier to avoid skipping. A hifi deck would be better for playing good quality vinyls.
When people get lost in thought it's often because it's unfamiliar territory.

My parents have a record player that I snapped the arm off as a child. It's a hideous machine, but I am in need of a record player...I have records but no player. So perhaps I'll get it fixed, or failing that (if the price is too high) I'll buy a second hand one from somewhere.

You can buy a new turntable for £50, don't expect it to be high quality but it'll do the job.
