Topic: Agreeing but then Disagreeing Posted: October 27 2006 at 01:34 |
It's happened to me several times over the years, so I'm sure some of you can relate....
Situation One:
You start talking about one of your favorite albums with somebody (friend, stranger, whoever), and the other person exclaims "That's one of my favorite albums, too!"
But once you start talking about the songs on the album, you find that the other person hates your favorite track(s), and vice versa!!!
Situation Two:
You start talking about one of your favorite bands with someone, who says "That's one of my favorite bands, too!"
But then you realize that the other person hates the band's album(s) you love, and vice versa!!! (Think Peter Gabriel-era Genesis and Phil Collins-era Genesis)
Can you think of any songs or albums that prompted this type of situation for you?

Not exactly, but sometimes people tend to 'intellectualize' an album; by that I mean they decide whether it has the qualities they tend to like and base their judgement on those criteria, rather than staying open to the music... i.e., I shouldn't like Tortoise based on my other top artists and yet they are one of my faves. Go figure.

Good point.
It happened to me few times with Genesis, King Crimson and Santana.
I like more early phase of those bands, (Genesis with Gabriel, KC until 1974, Santana until Caravanserai) and some of my friends like more second phase.
Even if someone like early phase of for example KC they like ITCOCK and I like more Larks tongues , Islands and Red.

Metallica, because that's as mainstream as my music diet reaches, and I happen to only find their first two albums decent and everything else awful. I have never found anybody to discuss prog with.

So Master of Puppets and ...And Justice For All are both awful?

Outside of Prog, this has happened a couple of times. For example, I
only like Aerosmith's 70's albums, while a friend of mine only likes
the 80's albums.

I agree...
usually the disagreements take place in some other music category, like corporate rock orsmt.
when discussing prog with someone, even if different styles is the topic, some kind of an understanding is achieved, for example DT metropolis 2 is an album that I know most of my friends like although preferreing other prog styles more than progmetal.

The Genesis link is an easy one to make. I happen to think that Phil Collins should be shot in the face......twice......with a hammer. I can think of plenty of people who love Collins and 80's Genesis.

I was gunna say the same thing.
Justice is their most detailed and intricate album.
