Ok,we did think it might be just 8 songs but Alex Lifeson says they want 12:

'We're going to continue until we have about 12 songs and finish up preproduction at the end of October, so we'll be really well prepared and then go in the studio in November and start recording...there's a quality about this record that's very expansive and musically lyrical. It's very melodic. I've written almost exclusively on acoustic guitar. When Geddy and I write, I'm playing acoustic and he's playing bass, so there's a different character to the way the writing is developing.

To me, it seems so apparent immediately whether a piece of music works or not when it's written on acoustic. You're not fooled by some distorted sound or some effect you put on guitar or something like that. This is pure in its essence and you know right away whether this chorus works or whether this verse works.
So I'm really excited about the way this is going to develop once we start recording it."

So no 10 minute tracks......

Well normally they also go to another studio to record specific instrument parts and then there will be a lay-off til after Xmas.

So including mastering to get it perfect, then some more to botch the whole sound (),maybe April or more likely May.

Also, probably no songs with wierd structures since Alex Lifeson is talking about verses and choruses.

Lets not presume too much here.  Regardless of their latest releases, I for one am always excited for a new Rush album.

I wish they wouldn't try and force out 12 songs... you know 3 of them are going to be weak as a result...

but hey, a NEW RUSH album!Clap

You're probably right, but "Close to the Edge" has verses and choruses. Wink

Hopefully Rask (producer) will not let this one get away from them.  Given what they have been releasing lately, they need to concentrate on sound above all else.  Vapor Trails was a sonic abomination.

From what Alex is saying, I am getting the impression this one is going to have  a more straight rocking Presto era feel with a recording outcome similiar to Feedback.  This is not the worst scenario, but I don't think it is the best either.

imho

Let's wait and see.

@Tony: how about 8 out of 12 being 10+ minutes, that would be great, not? Wink

but would require a complete change in the capacity of ordinary CDs...

80 mins is the maximum for a single CD..and I cant see them issuing a double album...

better not be another Vapor Trails orientation, or I'll really start "bashing". I kinda set green pass to that one, I kinda skipped the Feedback vision, but another settlement within the heavy will disappoint.

other than that, good news from our artists. Smile

Funny you say that. Ever since I heard 2112 I was hoping they were going to have a follow up concept album to it.  I even planed it out:  2168 - follows the path of a path of a boy born into the royal family, but later finds out he is the one to over throw the preists. - 5 minute track - 13 minute epic - 4 minute track for the radio - 15 minute epic - 5 minute instrumental.

Anyway hope the new album is good.
Into this wild Abyss the fiend
Stood on the brink of Hell and looked a while,
Pondering his Voyage.
