I start the September additions with the long overdue beautiful new remasters of the Captan Beefheart catalog, all treasures of course:

CAPTAIN BEEFHEART / MAGIC BAND ~ UNCONDITIONALLY GUARANTEED

Captain Beefheart (born Don Vliet and later adopted the name Van Vliet) was one of America's most enigmatic and groundbreaking Rock personalities. His ability to mix jazz, blues, contemporary classical and rock made him a unique figure and a true innovator. He met and befriended Frank Zappa and the two cooperated in many ways (making movies, music and business together). Vliet was active on and off the music scene for about 20 years (between the late 1960's and late 1980's), with long periods of inactivity in between. His back-up group, called The Magic Band, changed personnel frequently, but always included top-notch players based in different musical genres like blues, jazz or rock. He left a sizable legacy of superb music, which can now be appreciated with a much better perspective than at the time of its release. This album, recorded in 1973, marks a more "commercial" period of Vliet's output, after a series of almost avant-garde albums, starting with his debut Safe As Milk from 1967. The songs are much closer to the blues and rock tradition, but Vliet's unique voice and songwriting make them fascinating enough to last for posterity and become classics.

Another Captain Beefheart remaster added today:

CAPTAIN BEEFHEART / MAGIC BAND ~ BLUEJEANS & MOONBEAMS
VIRGIN 365515 ~ USA ~ Classic Rock (Barcode: 094636551524)
Recorded: 1974 Released: 2006
Following the release of Unconditionally Guaranteed, Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band were about to start a European tour, but as a result of the commercial failure of the album (and other personal problems between Vliet and the band members) the Magic Band fell apart shortly before the tour was about to start. Vliet haphazardly put together a new version of the Magic Band, which made the tour (see the Live London '74 album) and later recorded this album. The music again displays a more "commercial" approach, but the album was received coldly by critics and fans alike, which caused Vliet to withdraw from the music scene for a few years with the decision not try to make "commercial" music again. Mind you, "commercial" when referred to Vliet's output, takes quite a different meaning than in most cases. In retrospect this is still a classic album, which lost nothing of it's magic in the passing of time. Vliet's brilliant vocal interpretations and superb songwriting are apparent and
this is definitely a must have for all his numerous fans.

I'm happy to offer some new features on the site: From now on all the new items will include additional information, like the barcode number, year of recording and year of release of every item. Gradually this information will be added to all existing items as well.

Two more Captain Beefheart remasters added today:

CAPTAIN BEEFHEART / MAGIC BAND ~ SHINY BEAST (BAT CHAIN PULLER)
VIRGIN 365517 (Barcode: 094636551722) ~ USA ~ Classic Rock
Recorded: 1978 Released: 2006
Following the release of Bluejeans & Moonbeams and the lack of success of his last two albums, Vliet joined forces with his old buddy Frank Zappa, becoming a guest vocalist with Mothers of Invention during their 1975 tour (as captured on the live Bongo Fury album). He then borrowed some of Zappa's players to revamp his Magic Band. In 1976 he and his group recorded an album of completely new material, called Bat Chain Puller, which was stylistically much closer to his earlier works. Unfortunately that album was never released as a result of legal battles between his record label (Virgin) and a new record label (Warner Bros.) he tried to sign with. Soon after the studio tapes leaked to the bootleg industry, which flooded the market with illegal copies of the album, making Vliet quite unhappy. To resolve this mess Vliet recorded in 1978 a new version of the album (using a different line-up of the Magic Band), this time called Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller) for Warner Bros., who tried to
release it the same year, but alas again it was legally bulldozed by Virgin. Fortunately Virgin eventually released the album in 1980 (after a settlement with Warner Bros. was reached). Musically the album is a triumphant return to Vliet's idiosyncratic, magical mix of originality and genius (rivaled only by his friend Zappa and often quite similar to his music). The album also featured Vliet's original paintings used for the cover art, revealing his other (apart from music) artistic vocation. This is a masterpiece of rock music and a timeless classic.

CAPTAIN BEEFHEART / MAGIC BAND ~ DOC AT THE RADAR STATION
VIRGIN 365513 (Barcode: 094636551326) ~ USA ~ Classic Rock
Recorded: 1980 Released: 2006
When the legal mess between record labels, which prevented any of his album to be released for almost six years, was finally over with the release of Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller) in 1980, Vliet immediately started work on a new album, which was completed and released later in the same year. Doc At The Radar Station was Vliet's ultimate statement and generally considered his best work of the (third) last period of his career. It is stylistically much harsher and harder than its brilliant predecessor, closely reminiscent to the early works, but definitely much richer musically. The almost industrial sound blends perfectly with the bizarre lyrics and Vliet's expressive vocalizations. Considering the fact that by the time this music was recorded, the world was sinking deep into sludge of musical mediocrity and muck, Vliet's star shines even brighter. Definitely a timeless classic, which hopefully will be discovered by the young generation of music lovers, as well as re-discovered by
 some old-timers.

The last two Captain Beefheart remasters added today:

CAPTAIN BEEFHEART / MAGIC BAND ~ ICE CREAM FOR CROW
VIRGIN 365514 (Barcode: 094636551425) ~ USA ~ Classic Rock
Recorded: 1982 Released: 2006
Sadly and unexpectedly, this album was to be Vliet's swan song. Recorded with (yet again) new line-up of the Magic Band, it was to a large extent a closing of a circle by this visionary artist, as he re-visits here many of his earliest musical ides going way back to the 1960's, which somehow remained omitted from earlier albums. Stylistically it is closest to his early recordings as well, with the same atmosphere of tension and frequent changes of mood and tempo. Vliet throws the lyrics at the listener with harsh rapid fire, more often in spoken form than singing. Of course the magic is all there, even when the music becomes aggressive, metallic and dissonant. Obviously influenced by the punk movement (although he himself was an inspiration to many of the movement's pioneers - another circle closing), Vliet incorporates the punkish alienation and vehemence superbly, spicing it with brilliant overlays of complex outlandish musical threads, creating a collage of rare intensity and
expressiveness. This album requires some digestion, but eventually it remains standing as an icon of the era and the last obelisk of Vliet's colonnade. After this album was recorded, Vliet disconnected himself from the world of music, dedicating all of his time to painting, living in total seclusion, and eventually tragically fell victim to multiple sclerosis.

CAPTAIN BEEFHEART / MAGIC BAND ~ LIVE LONDON `74
VIRGIN 368577 (Barcode: 094636857725) ~ USA ~ Classic Rock
Recorded: 1974 Released: 2006
Although Vliet and his Magic Band left us a sizeable legacy of recorded material, they never released a live album, which is quite strange in many ways. This album was recorded during the European tour, which followed Vliet's signing with Virgin and the release of the Unconditionally Guaranteed album. As his band fell apart shortly after the recording of the album, Vliet had to put together a new version of the band just before the tour started and rehearse with them both the new material from the album they were promoting, as well as some old favorites - an almost impossible task considering the complexity of the material and the lack of time. Nevertheless, as we can hear here, the results were brilliant, as always, with everything he ever attempted. The concert captured here presents Vliet and the band at top form and the music flows beautifully from start to finish. Earlier version of this recording appeared on CD in semi-bootleg versions, but never in full and never as brilliantly sounding as this one. A must! (Just for the sake of historic perspective, the band who used to open the shows for Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band on this tour were no other than Henry Cow, who also signed with Virgin at that time)

I have finally managed to get the rare private edition albums by the US band Djam Karet, so here are the first two:

DJAM KARET ~ THE RITUAL CONTINUES
HC PRODUCTIONS 007 ~ USA ~ Progressive Rock
Recorded: 1982 - 1987 Released: 1993
2nd album by the US Prog band, which is undoubtedly one of the most innovative, creative and groundbreaking Prog outfits to emerge on the scene. Founded in 1984 and focused around two guitarists: Gayle Ellett and Mike Henderson, with bassist Henry J. Osborne, and drummer Chuck Oken, Jr., all of whom remain in the band 20+ years later, the band also uses occasional guest musicians and as-hoc members. Their music includes a wide range of styles and influences - psychedelic, Prog, electronic and ambient, rock and blues - based on a framework of a jam band and shifting dramatically form one album to another. Their vast recorded output presents an entire universe of music, which requires attentive repeated listening, but is deeply rewarding. Djam Karet were one of the first bands to realize that shopping for recording contracts with the music moguls is pointless and contra-productive and they released their own music independently. Later on they started also to cooperate with Cuneiform
Records to reissue and release some (but not all) of their music. The CD reissue of this album includes live material recorded in 1987, which was included on the original cassette / LP release of The Ritual Continues, as well as a couple of tracks from a 1982 cassette release by pre-Djam Karet group called Happy Cancer.

DJAM KARET ~ COLLABORATOR
HC PRODUCTIONS 008 (Barcode: 796086000828) ~ USA ~ Progressive Rock
Recorded: 1994 Released: 1994
A very ambitious and groundbreaking project by Djam Karet, which realizes for the first time the concept of co-composing and co-recording music by different artists, without the need of physical contact. The members of the band asked seven musician friends (Kit Watkins, Steve Roach and others) to compose and record pieces of music and then send the recorded music to them. The band then recorded their contributions on top of the existing music and thus created a collaboration project. The resulting music is a dense, complex and intricate matrix of sounds, often dark and depressing, but always fascinating. Obviously this music would be more interesting to listeners of ambient / contemporary classical listeners than the average Prog fan, but people with open minds (and ears) should find here a treasure chest of lasting musical challenges.

Another two Djam Karet rarities added today:

DJAM KARET ~ ASCENSION
HC PRODUCTIONS 012 (Barcode: 747014432020) ~ USA ~ Progressive Rock
Recorded: 2000 - 2001 Released: 2001
Ascension is a companion album to New Dark Age (subtitled New Dark Age Vol.2) and includes outtakes of the New Dark Age sessions, which were not included on the album. The concepts and musical ideas of the album are further explored and expanded here, with the entire range of Djam Karet's technical vocabulary. The atmosphere is more ambient than on the original album, with many world music accents and long contemplative passages, making this an ideal late-night listening favorite. Pink Floyd and Porcupine Tree fans should find this particularly interesting, although this music is slightly more demanding.
Limited Edition of 750 copies

DJAM KARET ~ LIVE AT NEARFEST 2001
NEARFEST 0002 (Barcode: 829155000228) ~ USA ~ Progressive Rock
Recorded: 2001 Released: 2004
The Nearfest Prog Festival is often the place where bands get the first major exposure to the wide (at least in the US) audience. In spite of the fact that Djam Karet have been recording albums since 1985 they remained relatively unknown for many years (which of course is a shame). Hopefully the crowd present at this concert finally discovered the band and would extend the fan base. They surely loved the band playing, as the standing ovation at the end of the music attests. The music includes a selection of tunes from several Djam Karet albums, but as usual in their case every performance is completely unique. Recommended!

Two Prog albums added today, one older and pretty rare, the other very new:

DEADWOOD FOREST ~ DEADWOOD FOREST
PRIVATE EDITION ~ USA ~ Progressive Rock
Recorded: 1997 Released: 1998
1st album by this Texan Prog group, which would come to the attention of Prog fans with their superb follow up album, called Mellodramatic. The album includes 14 songs quite different from each other but all well crafted and clearly showing the potential, which was to be realized in full on the next album. The musicianship is not perfect, but the youthfulness and naivete are charming and easily forgiven, considering the quality of the music. The keyboards parts are the album's strongest point, with the Mellotron presiding. Definitely worth investigating.

WHITE WILLOW ~ SIGNAL TO NOISE
LASER`S EDGE 1046 ~ NORWAY ~ Progressive Rock
Recorded: 2006 Released: 2006
5th album by the Norwegian Prog group, which earned quite a following with their top class releases so far. As usual, they keep changing the line-up and musical style from album to album and this one is no exception. Following the trend of their last release, they strengthen the hard rock elements considerably and take a much more straight-ahead approach to the songwriting this time, which takes this album closer to the Prog Metal sub-genre than anything they recorded previously. The female lead singer does an excellent job and the production of the album is superb, but many of their traditional fans might find this music to harsh for their taste. On the other hand they might reach a completely new audience this time around.

It is always a supreme pleasure to add any new material by my favorite musician of all, Harold Rubin. I added today one of his albums and since I rewrote the review of his debut album, it is also included for you to re-descover:

RUBIN, HAROLD ~ BLUE BAG
PRIVATE EDITION ~ ISRAEL ~ Jazz
Recorded: 1996 Released: 1997
Harold Rubin is one of the very few true Renaissance men I've had the pleasure to meet and befriend over the years. An architect, a poet, a painter and an outstanding musician, but also a wonderful human being, who hates bullsh*t of any form and shape. This, often bold, honesty is present in every creative process Harold is involved with, and what makes his music so wonderfully different and outstanding. Blue Bag is a musical suite, a complete work of art, rather than a collection of separate and unrelated pieces of music. It is probably Harold's most "accessible" album. It involves a larger group of musicians (as opposed to his regular trio / quartet setting) and for the first time also features vocals. Stylistically it involves, in addition to the obvious jazz contents, some rock elements (for the first time since Harold played with Zaviot), some theatrical aura and a much clearer melody lines. The entire album brings fond memories of Brecht's operas and works by musicians like Gunter Hampel and his wife Jeanne Lee or Mike and Kate Westbrook. It also prominently features for the first time Harold's poetry, which constitutes the libretto for the entire suite. The musicians playing with Harold include Mark Smulian, his partner in Zaviot, who proves he can play the guitar as skillfully as he can handle the bass, Smulian's wife the wonderful singer Gani Tamir, Israel's best drummer Assaf Sirkis (who plays on many albums released on my Jazzis label), extremely talented trombonists Reut Regev and Rafi Malkiel, and bassist Amit Carmeli. Harold contributes his unique brand of clarinet virtuosity and occasionally recites / narrates his fantastic poetry with the music playing in the background (reminiscent of the wonderful "Jazz & Poetry" movement of the 1960's). If I could, I'd make every person on this planer to listen to this Magnum Opus, but obviously I can't do that. Hopefully some of you will read this and subsequently discover some of the best music ever
 recorded on this planet.

RUBIN, HAROLD ~ CLARINETVOYANCE
JAZZIS 1006 ~ ISRAEL ~ Jazz
Recorded: 1987 - 1989 Released: 1990
Harold Rubin is undoubtedly the most interesting and spectacular jazz musician ever on the small Israeli scene. I first met Harold in 1987, when he formed the legendary group Zaviot and approached me to become their producer, which eventually resulted in the foundation of my Jazzis label and the Zaviot eponymous album as its first release. Shortly before Zaviot was formed, Harold picked up the clarinet for the first time in over two decades, after he put music aside upon his immigration to Israel from his native South Africa. He used to play Jazz in SA of course, mostly with the black musicians of Soweto (Kippie Gwanga was his close friend), which for a white Jewish boy was quite unthinkable at that time. Harold's work with Zaviot is of course both revolutionary and legendary, but his true nature as an improviser and free spirit was somehow constrained by the limits of the music Zaviot played. When I realized that, I used every opportunity to capture Harold playing in a variety of settings in parallel to the recordings made with Zaviot, especially when musicians visiting Israel were available and open enough to take part in spontaneously and often hastily arranged recording sessions. Soon there was enough material to release Harold's first album as a leader, using the accumulated material, which was to become Clarinetvoyance. This is the fist album recorded in Israel, documenting the process of collective improvisation and the free form music and I am proud to say a most notable addition to the Israeli jazz heritage. The duet with the German pianist Christoph Spendel was recorded during the sessions, which produced the Tel-Aviv Connection album (Jazzis). The trios with Charles Burnham were recorded the String Trio Of New York, of which he was a member, toured Israel. The long and complex improvised suite (Clairvoyance) was recorded when the Russian pianist Leonid Chizhik and bassist Victor Dvoskin came to Israel to play at the Eilat Jazz Festival. The rest of the pieces are duos with various Israeli musicians that Harold likes to play with. This is deeply emotional music, which requires attentive listening, but is able to lift the listener to lofty spiritual planes rarely achieved by listening to ordinary music.

Here is one more new Harold Rubin album I added today and another re-vamped write-up of his earlier album:

RUBIN, HAROLD ~ IVORY TOWER
PRIVATE EDITION ~ ISRAEL ~ Jazz
Recorded: 2001 Released: 2001
Harold Rubin not only single-handedly created the improvised music scene in Israel since the early 1990's, but was also the spiritual father of an entire generation of young Israeli players, who were receptive and open-minded enough to embrace this musical form. Many of the players, who started their way in various trios / quartets led by Harold, became leaders and first-rate musicians in their own right, often returning to play with their mentor years later. This album is an example of such a case, as it brings Harold together with a former member of his group Parpar (Butterfly in Hebrew), pianist Daniel Sarid. Sarid took part in the recording of the wonderful meeting between Harold and the Polish saxophonist Leszek Zadlo (released on Jazzis Records) a decade earlier and this album puts them side by side in the studio again. Of course Daniel refined and advanced his music immensely over the years and this meeting places him alongside Harold not as a student / disciple, but as an equal partner in the creative process. About a year before these sessions were recorded, Daniel recorded an excellent duo / trio album with his partner Hagai Fershtman (see their album on Earsay Records), so it was only natural to have Hagai as the drummer. Young bass player Adam Sheflan completed the quartet. The music is of course outstanding, as one might expect. Although written by Harold, other quartet members contributed a lot of creative input. There is plenty of wonderful solos and the quartet swings beautifully, even though the music is mostly free spirited and improvised. Harold recites some of his poems (with music in the background), something that has become an integral part of his unique Jazz act. This is a superb album in every respect and my only hope is that as many people can access this heavenly music as humanly possible.

RUBIN, HAROLD ~ TRIALOG
JAZZIS 1021 ~ ISRAEL ~ Jazz
Recorded: 1993 Released: 1993
My meeting with Harold Rubin and his music turned to be one of the crucial points of my life. Harold, who was at the time a member of the group Zaviot, impressed me immensely both as a person and a musician. His amazing way of playing the clarinet, the unusual voicing and the topsy-turvy twisting of the melody lines both inspired me and shook me up in spite of the fact that I did have decades of musical experiences behind me, mostly in the Jazz milieu. Now, many years later, I'm still under his spell and every new production involving Harold feels as fresh and exciting as ever. I suppose that the reason that the reason for Harold's musical magic is a result of the continuous change and development of his Art. In retrospect I can see clearly the direction his music has been taking and it's no surprise that this album is much more free and improvised that his earlier recordings. I consider Harold to be the most natural Jazz musician in Israel, and so is his music. Therefore it's only natural that he drifts towards the oral culture of his native South Africa, rather than towards the westernized melody lines, thus following the path well set by great Jazz Masters before him. Harold's partners on this album belong to another generation, but they have a lot in common with their mentor. They are also natural musicians, mostly self-educated, and therefore free of the limitations imposed by repetitive playing of worn out Jazz standards. Kobi Shefi has been playing with Harold for several years, and in time switched from guitar to bass guitar, providing both the pulse and the additional solo voice of the trio. He also contributes considerably to the trio's creative ambience. Asaf Sirkis is a recent addition to the trio, but his assimilation in these new musical surroundings is truly remarkable. Asaf is featured on many Jazzis releases and his ability to play in different styles, always in top form, proves his great talent. I should emphasize that this trio is not in any sense a standard leader / sidemen setting. This unique combination of three individuals, whose collected talents and skills create a greater whole, prevails in as atmosphere of mutual respect and admiration, while its members keep inspiring each other continuously. Fellow Israeli Jazz musicians often criticize Harold Rubin for being an amateur, a freak, and a free spirit. This controversy is not new to Jazz and all I can say is that the narrow-mindedness and stupidity are unfortunately also a part of the Jazz world. I hope that Harold's individuality and ingenuity prevails for many years to come, uplifting the spirits of those fortunate enough to comprehend and cherish it.

Another Harold Rubin album added today, bringing us almost to the complete Harold's discography - just one more left, to be added later on. Included also the last re-write on one of his older albums:

RUBIN, HAROLD / JONES, JEAN CLAUDE ~ MUSE & MUSIC
KADIMA COLLECTIVE 03 ~ ISRAEL ~ Jazz
Recorded: 2004 Released: 2005
This album documents the musical / spiritual meeting between the two leaders of the Israeli improvised music scene. Harold Rubin started the movement on the late 1980's, after his legendary group Zaviot disbanded, leading a long series of ensembles active in the Tel-Aviv area, where he lives. Jean Claude Jones (or J.C. to his friends) arrived on the scene at about the same time, playing with another legendary group Kedma (both Zaviot and Kedma released their albums on Jazzis Records). Later on Jones played with many different ensembles in the Jerusalem area, where he lives, and founded the Kadima Collective - an association of improvising artists (cross-genre), which now independently releases various projects on record. Their path crossed many times over the years but they somehow failed to record together and this much overdue album puts things right at last. The intimate duo of clarinet and electro acoustic bass is the foundation of the music, with Harold reciting / voicing his poetry on top and Jones adding live electronics occasionally, all of those based on musical telepathy and interplay between the creators. This is intense stuff, requiring total attentiveness and open-mindedness, but for people who are willing to stretch out their intellectual muscles the rewards are infinite. Sadly, there is very little music of such quality being made anywhere in the wold these days.

ZADLO-RUBIN-PARPAR ~ SPRINGTIME IN WINTER
JAZZIS 1009 ~ ISRAEL ~ Jazz
Recorded: 1990 Released: 1990
This is a very special album for me, reaching far beyond the concept of capturing, for eternity, the magic moments of musical creation. It's an epitome of the many bonds of friendship between people involved in the Jazz scene worldwide, as well as a document of the creative process involved with group improvisation. Leszek Zadlo, who left Poland - his troubled homeland - in the 1970's, to live and create music in Germany, is today one of the most important Jazz musicians in Europe, and for me the best European saxophonist. His technique is brilliant and his improvisational skills unrivaled. This, combined with his charming personality, makes him a wonderful person and a dear friend since many years. Our common Polish cultural background is just one of the many layers of this friendship. Harold is of course another dear friend, with whom I had the privilege to experience some of the most exceptional moments in Israeli Jazz, since the early days of his first group Zaviot. His enormous vitality and esprit de corps (almost hyperactivity) are best illustrated by the fact, that at the time of this recording Harold was the leader of two separate groups, both called Parpar (Hebrew for butterfly). Therefore it was only natural to include both groups in this session. Leszek and Harold met several times in Germany, when Zaviot toured Europe. They developed an instant liking for each other as well as a phenomenal musical rapport. I'm happy to be the catalyst behind their friendship and this magnificent music. When the Goethe-Institut in Tel-Aviv decided to help us and bring Leszek for a tour in Israel, I immediately booked studio time to make this recording, since I knew about Leszek's and Harold's urge to play and record together. Their concerts in Israel as well as this recording are the best proof of the fact that human talent and creativity have no limits and know no borders. This album is dedicated to the People of Eastern Europe, for whom the Winter of 1989 / 1990 was really the most wonderful Spring they had experienced in decades.

I hope that the last 3 mailings with extensive Harold Rubin contents will make you all intereseted in the music of this genius....

The long awaited last Family remaster added today:

FAMILY ~ OLD SONGS NEW SONGS
MYSTIC 193 (Barcode: 604388675227) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock
Recorded: 1970 - 1971 Released: 2006
5th album, which was sort of a compilation of tacks released on earlier albums and singles (A's & B's), but re-recorded, re-dubbed and re-mixed by the then- current line-up of the band (this was probably the first ever remaster), as they were not entirely satisfied with the original versions. The album tracks the band's development between 1967 and March 1971 and emphasizes their amazing talents as songwriters and performers. Sadly Family never achieved the proper legendary status it truly deserves as one of the best UK bands on the Prog scene and hopefully the new remasters will help to expose their legacy to the young generation of Prog fans.

Please note that the Old Songs New Songs Box set is now deleted and is a much sought after collector's item.

Finally the fantastic new DVD by Arena is here:

ARENA ~ SMOKE & MIRRORS
METAL MIND 0063 (Barcode: 5907785027350) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock
Recorded: 2005 Released: 2006
Arena are undoubtedly the most consistent among the top neo-Prog bands and in the last decade the managed to record a remarkable body of work of the highest standard. Their Pepper's Ghost magnum opus was followed by a European tour and this is where the footage of this splendid DVD was filmed. The main concert was captured at a superb 10th Anniversary concert in Poland (where the band has an outstanding following and fan base) and it includes both older tunes spanning their entire career and tunes from the Pepper's Ghost album. The bonus material, recorded in Holland at the so called re-union concert (where the band is joined by past members) is more fan oriented and gives some interested insight about the band. There is also the usual plethora of bonus features like photo gallery, Interviews, etc. For the many Arena's fans this is a must have and also a great introduction to the band for those who are not yet familiar with their output. Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound, 172 minutes.

=====================================

Please note that all in print Verglas releases (including Arena) are back in stock, including the out of print (last on earth!) albums by Shadowland (another Clive Nolan band)!!!

=====================================

Also please note that the mega rare and out of print album by ex-Arena's vocalist John Carson is available in the SALE section for just US $ 5.00

=====================================

The stock clearing SALE is still on with most items rapidly selling out.

Here is a short update:

Sorry to neglect the new additions for a week but I have been frantically busy with the massive sale effort, which turned out to be very successful. The sale items were almost completely wiped out, alas they are back now at their "normal" US $ 10.00 price tag - still a great price for what they are if you ask me.

=====================================

Many new additiions are waiting in the pipeline, starting very soon.

=====================================

I managed to re-stock the majority of the available items. Most of the Out Of Stock items are not my "fault" - they are out of print and the labels just can't supply them, but I keep trying.

=====================================

May I turn your attention to the One Of A Kind items again and particularly to the releases on the legendary LINE label, the German re-issue pioneer, which was active in the early 1990's and is long time gone. All the LINE items are collectors' items and I checked some prices on e-bay and GEMM and they easily fetch US $ 30.00 to 50.00. I sell my remaining stock at US $ 10.00 and I am quite surprised they are still in stock? All LINE items are strictly 1 copy in stock. Attention all you collectors!

=====================================

Let me welcome all the new customers, who recemtly joined our ranks. I hope all of you enjoy my service and stay along for the ride, which is always fun.

I finally managed to lay my hands on a few copies of the excellent debut album by Helmet Of Gnats, which is really hard to get:

HELMET OF GNATS ~ A HELMET OF GNATS
PRIVATE EDITION ~ USA ~ Progressive Rock
Recorded: 1996 Released: 1996
1st album by this excellent US Prog / Fusion band. The band was founded way back in 1982 by guitarist Chris Fox and keyboards player Matt Bocchino and over the years went through several personnel changes around the two core members. As many young bands they started by playing covers of 1970's Prog / Fusion material by bands like Return To Forever, Bruford, Dixie Dregs, etc. but eventually started to include more self penned material, which developed into a full act. By the time this album was recorded they played all instrumental original material. The album is a great example of the Prog / Fusion genre, played with gusto and fire. The compositions are interesting and well developed, based firmly on the tradition of the genre, with enough originality to turn them into a superb listening experience. The only pity is that it took the band 8 years to come up with a follow up album, which fortunately was very much worth waiting for. Warmly recommended!

As the Jewish New Year is only two days away, I wish everybody a healthy and happy Holiday. May we all enjoy a peaceful year this time.

The second Helmet Of Gnats album added today, a tre gem:

HELMET OF GNATS ~ HELMET OF GNATS
AMBIENT 004 ~ USA ~ Progressive Rock
Recorded: 2004 Released: 2004
2nd album by this excellent US instrumental Prog / Fusion band. Recorded and released eight years after their splendid debut, the album is truly a prime example of the up-to-date developments in the genre. The music swings and is extremely enjoyable and yet maintains a very high level of musicianship and sophistication. The original compositions are strong and interesting, with enough rhythm changes to keep the listener on his toes at all times. Superb musicianship by all the players, a unique atmosphere and an absolutely great sound quality make this one a sure winner. There is very little left for me to say other than recommend this album wholeheartedly. Fusion fans will love this to bits!

More restocking!

Happy Jewish New Year to everybody!

Another US Prog album added today, this one long overdue:

BUBBLEMATH ~ SUCH FINE PARTICLES OF THE UNIVERSE
PRIVATE EDITION (Barcode: 656613470824) ~ USA ~ Progressive Rock
Recorded: 2002 Released: 2002
1st album by this excellent US Prog band and one of the most impressive debut albums of the decade. The group creates a unique mixture of Prog elements from the classic 70's to the RIO and even avant influences. The melodic approach and the superb vocal work - both solo and harmonies - are remarkably similar to Echolyn (in fact, if I were listening to the album as part of a blindfold test, I'd have been convinced this is Echolyn, or rather Echolyn on acid). The music is very intense and most of it very up-tempo (to say the least), which makes listening to this album a very fierce experience - surely not recommended while driving as the danger of losing ones senses is very real. Excellent instrumental work by everybody involved, lots of unexpected rhythm changes and melody twists - in short everything likeable one can ask for in a good Prog album. Most warmly recommended and waiting for the next one with great expectations!

Tonight we celebrate the Jewish New Year, so all the best to everybody!

A long anticipated fantastic DVD added today:

BRUFORD, BILL ~ ROCK GOES TO COLLEGE
WINTERFOLD 008 (Barcode: 604388673827) ~ UK ~ Progressive Rock
Recorded: 1979 Released: 2006
Filmed at Oxford Polytechnic, this is one of the only two TV appearances ever captured by this remarkable group. Featuring the creme de la creme of the UK Fusion players, Bruford's band released the first two albums before this concert was filmed and therefore the music includes material from these albums (Feels Good To Me and One Of A Kind). With the sublime Annette Peacock on vocals, Allan Holdsworth on guitar, Dave Stewart on keyboards and Jeff Berlin on bass, this is definitely the finest UK Fusion ensemble of the period. I won't repeat again how revolutionary and important this music is - every Bruford and / or Fusion fan surely already knows this. But since this is the first visual document of this music, the importance of this DVD is enormous and no wonder it was one of the most anxiously anticipated releases ever. Pure delight! 42 minutes.

The sale offer continues!
