The arranger and composer Gil Evans ist mostly known for his collaboration with Miles Davis, which shadows a little his solo output. He has used quite early ( when he worked with The Claude Thornhill Orchestra) unusual (in Jazz) instruments as French Horns and developped a style of his own, based on unusual instrumentations and arrangements. 'The Individualism Of Gil Evans' (1964) is an absolute masterpiece of Big band arrangements. Outstanding tracks : 'Time Of The Barracudas' co-written with Miles Davis, 'Las Vegas Tango' his most famous composition , covered among others by Robert Wyatt ('End Of An Ear') and 'Spoonful' (only on the CD)
