Band Problem

   Hey,

I don't really know where to post a thread about my own band, we are
prog, but it would seem wrong to post it in the prog talk.  But,
basically there is a problem, and we would like your input.

Basically, our lead singer who also plays some guitar & keyboards
has somewhat of a case of "lead singer syndrome" , to go into more
detail, he doesn't practice anymore, which has caused his singing to
suffer (lately when practicing harmonies, me and our guitarist were
able to stay on the notes FAR better than him, which worried me) and he
is quite a poor guitarist now (he is just a beginner keyboardist, I
have 12 years of Classical training for piano) and he is now well below
the rest of the band's abilities, as opposed to 4 years ago when we
were all near the same level (forgetting my Piano experience).

He also shows a lack of effort in promotion and anything band related,
he does however, show up to all the practices, if we give him due
notice.

He doesn't seem like a team player, for instance, if we write a song
without him, he won't like it for no apparent reason (although we all
know it's because he didn't help write it), and he has said things like
"I don't show you all my good riffs because those are for me".

We have had many talks with him about this and the band on many
different topics, all being about him being a problem in the band. (He
has even been kicked out twice in the past)

Currently, we have a gig friday and the following friday, we plan to
kick him out after the gig this friday, and hopefully we will be ready
for the following friday. We decided today that we will leave him the
option to shape up and come back if he feels the band is important
enough to him and if he is willing to put in as much effort as the rest
of the band.

If you listen, I would really appreciate if you could let us know if
you think his vocals are a large part of our sound, or if you think we
can do without him. (Me and the guitarist will take over lead vocal
duties.)

	Aah, band drama, it's deja vu all over again..... It seems your lead singer could lead to being problematic, and when someone is tempermental, you gotta figure out how to work with them. I like your ultimatum idea, however, it could lead to him (somehow) thinking that you don't consider him an important member of the band. When writing, frequently ask him for his input, and get an answer out of him, even if you have to bug the hell out of him for it. You have to act serious yet sympathetic at the same time. Well, that's just my opinion.

	He's saving his best riffs for himself? That sets off an alarm. Sounds like he's keeping his "best" material for when he can find a "better backup" band and dump the rest of you. A lack of respect for the band, if you ask me. He's no longer a team player. Tell him he should find a band that he can play his best riffs with. I wouldn't even give him the ship up option. I heard the music, I like it. I can't say if he's that important to the sound or not. As I said, he sounds like he's ready to dump the rest of the band anyway. You'll be better off without, he's not worth the trouble in my opinion.

	Whoa, sorry, looked at this all wrong. Is he/did he used to be a good friend? Because this plays greatly into the equation. However, if he's more trouble than he's worth, and makes your prog band, well, regress, then its a good idea to consider giving him the axe.

	For the reputation of the band - get rid of him. one bad member is worse than no member at all. he can still be your friend, though using your band to boost his ego is not very friendly!!

	you guys rock, alot, i REALLY dig your sound, i have to admit you singer gets off ALOT, but he kinda sounds like the singer from van der graaf generator, force that him to practice, haha, good luck.
