Prefered US proto-prog band please.

lovecraft

but with Spirit, and Jefferson Airplane coming up, this will likely change : Love the Fudge and Touch also
let's just stay above the moral melee
prefer the sink to the gutter
keep our sand-castle virtues
content to be a doer
as well as a thinker,
prefer lifting our pen
rather than un-sheath our sword

not very much bands to choose from ;)

I make a decision for Vanille Fudge, though they sound more than dated today.

For me Vanilla Fudge: very dynamic and varied sound (blues, rock, soul, jazz, classic), Uriah Heep, Yes and Deep Purple have pointed at Vanilla Fudge (the name is derived from an ice-cream) as an important source of inspiration. I love the omnipresent Hammond B3 organ sound, the fiery electric guitar and the distinctive soulful vocals, I hope their 2-live LP will be released on CD Clap !

I think Vanilla Fudge is important as a proto-prog band, but my vote goes for HP Lovecraft. It's relatively an obscure band and I think everybody should give it a try; it might not have so obvious prog elements as VF, but they are quite versatile and their musicianship is really good.
