I think Marillion made a serious upgrade when Mosley replaced Pointer. Pointer's drumming is pretty lifeless (which is my only complaint with Arena).

I agree with that description with Pointers playing as being lifeless, he's my main complaint about Script..., though it did kinda force Trewaves in really having to excel on the bass to cover any lack of imagination in the rhythm section that might show up.

Ian Mosley is much better.

I prefer Mosley, though i still liked Pointer. Granted he wasn't the best drummer, but he wasn't bad. He didn't take anything away from the music, at least for me.

no doubt in my mind. Mosley is clearly better (at least for Marillion he is)

No contest- Ian Mosley. Pointer's drumming is pretty poor on Marillion's otherwise superb debut 'Script...' (something they clearly share with Genesis was a poor drummer on their first album; I consider 'Trespass' to be the first real Genesis album, in truth) . Fish since branded Pointer a 'weekend musician who got lucky' (LOL), and although he's a bit better in Arena, the album I have of theirs ('Pepper's Ghost') doesn't quite click with me for some reason.

Not much of an innovative comment as agreeing with the previous posts, though, I think it's obvious Ian Mosley's work on Marillion was much better than Mick Pointer (at least in the instrumental sense), but, then again, maybe the drum notes weren't that much of a challenge to begin with. Nevertheless, Pointer's participation in Marillion was possibly the worst of all band members (not implying he was/is a bad drummer, at all), founding percussive rhythms of monotonous beats, in comparisson to Ian's wider range of flexibility and constructively diverse performance, though, again: perhaps an intended thought to coax with the album's recording - all munificent hopes, but there's always Recital of the Script to take away the benefit of the doubt, shamefully.

This is why you should let Robin save the day...

Definetely Mosley, poor Mick, he's getting bashed in here! Mosley is more appropriate for Marillion though.
